My sister's Live Messenger (V. 8.1) suddenly stopped being able to send and/or recieve messages. Whenever I try to, it changes from her screenname to the sign in email address and it doesn't go through.
She tried uninstalling and reinstalling and had no results. She even tried installing an older version, but no change. One more uninstal and reinstall of the newest version, and she's now suddenly able to send and recieve my messages, but no one else's. And I still have the same thing happening with her screenname changing over.
She did reboot her computer several times in the uninstall and installing process, and her messenger was working fine yesterday.
Any clues what to do or what's going on?

This is happening to my best friend as well. It started with my name changing last night and then today it is as if there is any pause in the conversation, I can't see her messages and she can't see mine. It stays that way until I message her again and then we can "see" each other. it is REALLY annoying and would like to know how to fix this! She has the same version your sister has.
Someone please help! This is driving me nuts lol

Same here in Belgium; Hasselt
I'm on Msn messenger 7.0 (!!) since I prefer using win 2K. SInce yesterday/today, I've been having the exact same problems as mentioned above.
The whole e-mail adress instead of screen name, and not receiving anything, only when I've started a conversation first etc..
Strange thing is, that a pc in the same network, running msn live on win xp, doesn't have this problem.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but I don't have a hotmail e-mail adress, and have always used my yahoo e-mail.. (!!!!)
I've got no clue what's going on, I really need this fixed soon. I need msn for my exams :(

Well my friend can't start a conversation with me! I have to start it. And every now and then she gets a message saying some parts of this conversation is unavailable.
And she is running XP. And she does have a hotmail account. This is just odd. Hopefully since it seems to be widespread we can have an answer soon!!

Ok, small update; I'm only having trouble with receiving apparantly.
It seems that when I start the conversation, the other person can also answer me (aka, I can receive). But sometimes, even that doesn't work.
I wonder if this is due to a specific server malfunction or something. Strange since my brother in the room next to me can send/receive (allthough he has Xp & Live msn)

I'm having the same problem, i am able to chat with just a few of my contacts that are online. However with my sister that is sitting next to me on her laptop- we are both online and can see each other some of the time(when i log off and come back on 50% of the time it shows her as offline even though i see she's online cuz she's sitting next to me), but when we sent a msg to each other nothing pops up on the other's screen. Nothing happens.I've also tried to delete her off my list and me off of hers and now it's gotten to a point where we aren't on each other's list even the regular contact and when i try to re-add her it says she's been added and can't be duplicated... I've tried to un-install and reinstall Windows Live Messanger (8.1) I'm running it on win XP...I've also rebooted both computers involved lot's of times, i've even ran a spyware program to make sure it's not a bug that is on the system... and haven't ever had any problems before. If anyone can help...let me know...

In my messenger log, the same lines keep popping up: Dunno if it's related.

Hi,
Looking into it, I haven't heard of any other problems today though. Although I'm hesitant to declare this a client problem given what you've all indicated in the thread.

Thanks for looking in to it Jonathan.
I found this thread were people where were having the same problemes.
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?pg=2&p=1&tid=9e9d684c-da0d-40f1-adb2-d9e369dce76a&dg=microsoft.public.windows.live.messenger
You wrote in that thread that there was something with the Californian servers. But I'm in Europe > Belgium > Hasselt, so I'm not sure this is the same problem..
I also posted this thing under the msn messenger subforum, there's also a person there who has this problem.
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.msn.messenger&cat=en_US_c5125da0-f050-4dce-90f2-5bd35b00ba4a&lang=en&cr=US
Grtz K.
Ps: Msn is still acting up currently.

I've been having the same problem, along with my girl friend...
Account A - This one. Account B - A [ at ]hotmail one Account C - her account [ at ]yahoo.com
A can send messages to B, but can't receive any messages back A can send messages to C, but can't receive any messages back B can send messages to C, but can't receive any messages back A & B can send messages to a 4th person in the UK and receive back.
in all cases, not only do messages not get sent, but trying to do anything like file transfer, nudge, wink results in the system claiming targets client does not support it.
We've tried with 7.5, 8.1, 8.5, webmessenger and meebo so it's not client related.

Well, I think that, allthough I live in Belgium, my ISP's main server is located in the UK (telenet). Maybe it has something to do with that..
Besides only showing my e-mailadress as screenname and not being able to receive mesages (half of the time, sometimes they do come through), people can't send me buzzers or stuff anymore. Instead, they get a message saying that my msn version doesn't support buzzers.
Also note that the first few seconds I log in, they can see my actual screen name. But as soon as they try to send anything, it goes away again and I don't receive anything..

I am also having this problem but I have not had the same trouble using other clients. I used Pidgon, Trillian with no problems what so ever... these programs drive me nuts and i'd rather be using msn.
The problem has got worse over the last few days originally i was using the latest version of messenger.. I switched to pidgon and trillian to try my luck and they worked fine. Then i switched back to msn but downloaded the Beta instead this time round.. it worked great for a day and then when i restarted my computer MSN repaired itself and the problem was back.
Has anyone found out anything that can help yet?

I am having a similar problem, when I type out something and press send it wont send! I sometimes have to paste a line and send it up to 20 times for it to finally go through. I've tried reinstalling msn, making sure norton firewalls aren't messing anything up and restarting my computer (a toshiba laptop that is from xmas so hardly old and incapable of msn).... I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO! I have msn 8.1. Should I try another version? I wish I knew what was causing the problem. Thanks for any help.
