Greetings,
Do you just see the text instead? If so, it's possible it just got switched off.
To turn it back on, press Alt-T on the keyboard in any Messenger window, choose Options,
choose the Messages category and make sure both options for the emoticons have been selected.
Assuming they were turned off, select them, click OK and close and reopen any conversation
windows.
