Audio 'White Noise' during a video call
Dave 07.07.2007 12:52:01
When I am on a video call both ends get 'white noise' through. It doesn't
happen all the time but we can be talking and then this will happen. We start
the call, have part of a conversation, and then without touching anything
this noise starts.
Both ends get it at the same time.
There is no set time for how long it occurs. It can be any time (currently
have timed different occurances at 15 seconds to 3 minutes)

It is not feed back or any such.

Anyone else finding this and got a work around?

Hi Dave,

Are you talking about a screeching sounds when you refer to "white noise" or
hissing/air noise? What I try to do to minimize any screeching noises is to
keep the audio microphone as far away from my computer's speakers as
possible. Also, keeping the microphone away from air drafts, fans or any
kind of air circulating device can minimize hissing/air noises in the
background. There's a chance a slower Internet connection between both
users can cause weird noises to creep through the IM conversation.

Greetings Dave,

This can happen when bandwidth starts to get limited or decreased. The codec will try to
adjust and each time you'll get this sound. If you're in an environment where the available
bandwidth is consistently changing, you'll see this regularly.

Hi there,

i've the same problem when connecting to friends above, nice to read the
aknowledgement of Jonathan, but that doesn't help us any further!! is there
a way to work around this??

thanks

I also frequently get this problem. My girlfriend lives in the US and I live
in London, so we use Messenger to have video conversations every day. The
noise (which is very annoying) will interrupt our conversations anywhere from
2 seconds to 3 minutes into a conversation. If you can bear it out, it
sometimes goes away (cuts out), but it's easier to just end the conversation
and start over. When this happens 30 time during a conversation it can be
pretty frustrating.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

btw, i've also experienced this problem using othe voip applications and
through different computers.

Glad it isn't just me then :D

It's not due to feedback from the speakers or fans through the mic as that
was a problem we were having at one point but have got around that.

It sounds quite reasonable for the bandwidth problem but you would expect
some degradation in the video. The visual 'freezes' for a short while,
buffering?, and then contiues but not at the same time as the skreech.

Sounds about the same as what Nangy and Chris are experiencing and it is
most annoying when talking to family and you can see them and have to finish
your conversation either with sign language or typing:)

Thanks for the replies
