Outlook removes Windows Live Mail as my preferred Email program.
knotmyline 12.07.2007 01:16:00
I have automatic update on my computer and whenever there is an update for
Outlook it decides that it needs to be the preferred Email program (in
Internet Options). Who the heck thought this was a great idea? Will someone
please slap the crap out of that person!

Can you tell I don't think much of this "Feature". Idiot!

hmm,
I have Outlook, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, and Thunderbird installed.
Tbird is my default, and nothing takes that away when I get the updates.

Hi Dave
Does this mean that if I load Thunderbird that my problem will go away?

Yes, the same thing always on my computer too. Windows XP Professional. I
find it very annoying to say the least.

Janice
Thanks for confirming I am not crazy (well at least about this issue).

I also have XP Pro and just remembered that prior to my use of WLM I used
Outlook Express and Outlook always removed that as my preferred email too.

Change it back in Internet Options. Then got to Start - Default Programs and
insure that WLM has all the defaults..

I also have Outlook and Windows Live Mail and from time to time (never
thought it was due to automatic updates) Outlook would simply be set as the
default mail client! Arrgh! That's annoying.

Hope they get it fixed.

Annoying as hell! Imagine a situation where you are usually not running as
an Administrator user account - you cannot change that setting from your
every day user account, so you have to log off once you notice the change,
log the Administrator on, change that setting, log off and log on again with
your user account for working. And that regularly about once a month. How
stupid can it get?

Don't hold your breath! We talked about that to the people of Microsoft's
Office team and they were hardly able to see a problem. Their basic line was
something like "Why would someone install Outlook and then /not/ want it to
be the default email handler?" Well, for me the question is much shorter:
"Why would someone install Outlook?" <eg>

I guess it never crossed their minds that some people actually need Outlook
other than to use it as an e-mail client... Like as in to sync with mobile
devices? (ActiveSync needs Outlook). Sighs...
