Font appearance funky
Tom 11.07.2007 19:46:03
I am having a strange problem viewing Comic Sans in received email messages.
The sender uses Comic Sans 10, but when I view the message it's Times New
Roman 10. I reply to the message, and the receiver still sees their original
Comic Sans. They reply back to me, and I see Times New Roman. If I use Comic
Sans in what I write, I can see it fine. It's only when the other person uses
it that it is a problem. I've been through all the settings and everything is
set correctly as far as I can tell. One interesting thing I just discovered
is that if I set mine to read messages as plain text the message shows an
attachment called "ATT00294.htm", and if I open this file I can see
everything correctly.

Any ideas?

If you are reading in Plain Text, the font you see is determined at Tools |
Options | Read | Fonts. When you open the attachment, you bypass those
settings and se it correctly. If you switch to read in HTML, it should be
the Comic Sans font.

More here:

Outlook Express message appears blank and has an ATT000XX.txt or an
ATT000XX.htm attachment:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312351

And from:
http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/decode.htm

Besides the problem described in this article with temporary files, Outlook
Express may have a blank message if Internet Explorer is set at View,
Encoding to Auto-Select. If so, disable the Auto-Select in Internet Explorer
and choose instead Western European (ISO). If your program has an option to
read HTML messages in Plain Text, the HTML version of the message may appear
as an ATT0001.HTM attachment (the number may vary).

When I switch to read in HTML, that's when I see Times New Roman instead of
Comic Sans. I just did a test. I have two identities, and I sent a message
from my other identity to my main one and I was able to see Comic Sans fine.
BUT, when I send myself a message from my work email (using Outlook 2003) the
font that comes through is Times New Roman. If I reply to that message, I see
Comic Sans in my Outlook. BUT, when the other person sends a message to my
work email (using Outlook 2003) I can see Comic Sans fine.

Is it possible that I have a corrupted identity or something? This is very
strange.

If you are using Outlook's RTF format, Outlook Express can't see it. Try
regular HTML in Outlook.

I am using regular HTML in my Outlook.

Oh, and I tried emptying temp files, etc. Still no luck.

OE simply doesn't like any messages sent from OL in other than Plain Text
format. Period.

OK. So are you saying to give up? :-(

And this just in. I had another message earlier in my Outlook from the same
person. This message thread had Comic Sans in it, and I could see it each
time the message was sent back and forth. Now, three hours later, all of the
Comic Sans now appears as Times New Roman. This tells me that this problem is
more than just Outlook Express. Right?

If you look at the HTML code generated by Outlook, you will see that it is
extremely bloated. It has gotten to the point where the Office-generated
HTML now is beyond Internet standards and is not decipherable by OE.

OK. But can anyone explain why my inability to see Comic Sans is not
consistent? I just sent myself a test message from Outlook to Outlook
Express, and Comic Sans came through fine. I replied to Outlook, and it came
through fine that way too.

The consistent problem I'm having is seeing the Comic Sans when it comes
from Outlook Express to Outlook Express. Is there a chance that the font is
corrupted on either machine? Or a corrupted identity?

The fonts themselves are not sent in the message, just the font name.

If you would like, you may send me one of the problem messages and I'll
take a look at it. It's best if you zip the message so that I get an
exact copy of it. To do that, do a File, Save As to an EML file of a
problem message. Then Right click the saved EML file and select Send
To, Compressed (zipped) folder. Then e-mail me the resulting ZIP file.
Alternately, you can do a Message, Forward As Attachment of a problem
message. This is not as good as the zip file since the headers can be
modified in transit which may obscure the problem. A simple Forward is
worthless since it does not include the headers.
