POP3 Receiving Mail Problems
Jamie Wright 13.07.2007 13:04:03
Having installed Windows Live Mail I copied my account from Windows Mail,
which was successfully downloading from my 2 POP3 accounts.
Live Mail doesn't download from one of the two accounts. It gives the
following error:

'Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connections. Possible causes
for this include server problems, network problems or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'Blyth Golf', Server: 'mail.blythgolf.co.uk' Protocol:
POP3, Port 110, Secure (SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F'

It downloads from one of the two accounts without any problems.

Does anyone have similar problems or any advice?

Many thanks

Jamie

When Windows Live Mail connects to your server, it is getting a response
like this:
+OK <20867.1184342139[ at ]foo.bar.com>

The part between the angle brackets makes Windows Live Mail think that your
server supports a login feature called APOP, so WLM tries APOP, but then
your server rejects it and closes the connection. Several others on this
newsgroup have also run into this problem. We have the fix for this issue,
but we have no details on when the next release will be.

Unfortunately, there is no work around for this issue, unless you can
convince your ISP to enable APOP. In some cases, it has appeared as though
the servers having this issue should support APOP, and it only needs to be
turned on. By the way, when mail clients such as WLM log into POP3 servers,
they usually send your password in clear text over the wire, which makes it
vulnerable. APOP, when enabled, protects your password by only sending a
hash of your password and the part in the angle brackets that was returned
by the mail server.

Thanks for beta testing!
David

David, I thought you were making that server response up, so I
connected to it via telnet, and confirmed that it really says that!
What possesses server administrators to use dummy names like
foo.bar.com instead of the actual server name?
