Problem after copying a user profile
apagano 08.07.2007 23:42:02
I'm using WindowsXP Professional with all the updates installed on a
Panasonic Laptop. I copied my user profile from the user account I usually
use to a second account using the procedure offered from the Microsoft
Knowledge Base. The copy went without a hitch. I shut down the computer and
rebooted into the second account.

The desktop in the second user account looked like my usual account,
everything from My Documents was mirrored fine, and my favorties in IE were
all there. However almost none of the programs that usually start up and
appear in the system tray like my antivirus and firewall started up. And a
few of the programs with shortcuts on the desktop fail to launch when double
clicked reporting "cannot install registry data."

I must have done something wrong when copying the profile or there are other
steps to the procedure. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

When copying the User Profile, did you take care not to copy the NTUSER.DAT,
NTUSER.DAT.LOG and NTUSER.INI file as stated in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151?

The link you reference provides instructions for copying data from a
corrupted profile to a new profile. This isn't my situation. Neither the
profile I'm copying nor the new profile are corrupted. I just wanted to
mirror a good profile with all the needed applications to a second user
account.
