Traverse Directory Permissions
Joe Kipp 09.07.2007 13:26:07
We’re in the process of migrating from Novell to Windows Server 2003. In
Novell when we grant permissions to the user groups at on a subdirectory they
automatically get permissions to the directories above so that they traverse
the file structure to gain access to the desired directory.

For example we grant Sam Smith permissions to the
\\Server\Vol\Department\Application\data directory. When we grant him
permissions on the data directory he can now connect to the \\server\vol
share and traverse the directory tree clicking on Department, then
Application and finally the data directory to gain access to the files in the
data directory.

I’m trying to find a way to simulate this without granting Sam read rights
to the directories above. To throw another wrench into the works we’re also
looking at Access Based Enumeration as well to preserve the look that our
users have become accustomed to.

Any help or words of advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Joe
