Shortcut creation with no arrow and cannot be deleted
Adam 03.07.2007 21:14:01
I need help in creating an shortcut on a user’s desktop that cannot be
deleted nor has a shortcut arrow on it. Similar to how AOL puts their
shortcut icon on user’s desktops. I am specifically looking at way to
manipulate the registry to do this. The other icons on the desktop can keep
their shortcut arrows. I just want to manipulate this one specific shortcut.
The ability to right-click and select delete would be good but not required.

Thanks in advance. If you need me to be clearer I, let me know and I will try.

Two things...

Why the multipost?
In the future, if you feel your query is relevant to more than one single
group - please crosspost instead of multiposting. It makes it easier on you
as well as those who might answer you - and you still get to spam more than
one newsgroup with your identical question. ;-)

Why would you want the ability to right-click and select delete on an icon
you cannot delete (per your earlier requirement in the same post...)?

Sorry about the multipost, I new to this newsgroup and didn't realize I could
crosspost. Anyway, Right click and delete is optional. I know that the AOL
icons I have seen in the past do have the right-click delete option, so I
wasn't sure if what i wanted to do; that having the right click delete was a
part of it. I just don't want the user to be selecting items on the desktop
to delete by pressing the delete key or dragging to the recycle bin.

To remove shortcut arrows:

Remove Icon Shortcut Symbols (Line 185)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Manual:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Scroll on down to Pifile. In the right pane, rename
ISSHORTCUT to read SHORTCUT.

Thanks Kelly, but I already know how to remove the shortcut arrow. I just
want to know how to prevent the actual shortcut from being deleted.

1- Open Regedit
2- Navigate to HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID
3- Create a new CLSID e.g. -
{7607f041-f0a8-1dc4-88e9-855851c85573}
4- Enter the name of item as the default value
5- Create a new key: DefaultIcon (specify the icon as default value)
6- Create new keys:
Shell > Open > Command
7- Enter the path of program in default value of command key
8- Create a new key : ShellFolder
9- In ShellFolder key, create a new REG_DWORD or REG_BINARY value and set its value to:
10 in DWORD, 10 00 00 00 in BINARY
10- Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exploter\Desktop\Namespace
11- Create a new key and enter the CLSID as name.

OR you can use the attached REG file to automate this. :)

Good Luck, Ayush.

Put the shortcut on "All Users" desktop instead of on the user's
individual desktops (assuming you want it on all desktops). If they are
not administrators, they can't delete it from there. If they are
administrators, you can't easily stop them, as they can do pretty much
anything.
If you are trying to put the shortcut in via a script or something while
the user is logged in - if they can put a file somewhere, they can
usually delete it, too.
Many users dislike icons on the desktop - maybe you should consider
putting it in the start menu, where they are less likely to want it gone.
To increase its visibility, you could put it in "Start Menu", not in
"Start Menu\Programs"
