Try going into Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>Under Device Volume click on Advanced. Check the mute box in the CD section. Uncheck if needed and that the slider is in the upper position. If that's Ok you could try clicking on the System Icon in Cont Panel select Advanced then Device Manager then Dvd/Cdr Drives then rt click on your Dvd drive and choose Uninstall. Restart and let XP reinstall it.
