running WMP9 using rosetta
w2ks 08.06.2007 15:25:02
does anyone know how to run WMP uwing rosetta?

i'm not talking about running it in a browser, i'm talking about running WMP
independently by launching the application in Mac.

when i click on get info on the WMP executbale, there is no option for "open
it with rosetta".

i cant use flip4mac because of DRM issue

Yes: double-click it. It will then run under Rosetta.

Of course. The option you are referring to is for Universal apps.
WMP is a PPC app: it has no choice but to run under Rosetta (emulation
of PPC on intel)

If you double-click the app, it will launch (and run under Rosetta
because it has no other choice).
If you have somw WindowsMeida content you want to access from a web
page, that's when you can have problems. The WMP Internet Plug-in is
also PPC, but the browsers are Universal. Since the two spaces are
separated, web browsers running natively on Intel (Universal apps)
will not be able to load a PPC plug-in running in Rosetta. The
solution is to force the browser to also run in Rosetta (it then
ignores the Intel portion of it's code and uses the PPC one under
emulation in Rosetta).
Then the two are in the same application space and they can work
together.Does that make any sense??

no it won't. this is how i know.

it can't play streaming WMV files using WMP.

i can force it to play by EMBEDDING the player on an html page, and open the
page using a browser with "open with rosetta" option enabled.

thanks Corentin

Well I wasn't saying through WMP itself. I was talking about the WMP
plug-in.

Well that's what I am saying :->
If you open the *browser* through Rosetta, then it's ont he same
application space as WMP and the plug-in can work in the browser.
WMP itself always launches through Rosetta.

Universal apps contain both Intel and PPC code.
On MacIntel they run through their native Intel code.

Apps like WMP are PPC only and the PPC code is emulated through
Rosetta. The solution for you is to force your (universal) browser to
run in Rosetta: the Intel code is not loaded and MacOS X loads the PPC
portion of the Universal Binary through Rosetta. Both the browser and
the plug-in are then in the same application space (Rosetta).
There is no way to run WMP or its plug-in in the Intel (native) space:
it needs to be re-written to be made Universal (and we unfortunately
all know that it will never happen).
Is that better??? :-)

Actually, if you can find the mms:// link from the source (or download
the .asx file and copy the mms:// link from in there) you could use it
directly from within WMP through the Open URL command.

Re: running WMP9 using rosetta

ok, i'm not a mac user at all, and i dont really understand this whole
rosetta thing( i know the fact that it is used to emulate PPC app, but that's
about it). but what i'm trying to do is: click on the wmp on mac, and open a
streaming wmv file, and being able to play it.

I'd like to know if somehow i can play streaming wmv files within the WMP
player itself, not VIA the browser addin.

it looks like i can't do it. i'm gonna have to embed a player in a browser
and play the contents through a browser. because this is the only way i can
get WMP to run using rosetta.

Well WMP doesn't really work like that under MacOS X (and it has
nothing to do with Rosetta). It's not a media browser at all.
You can open Windows Media *files* in WMP, or you can copy a link to a
streaming content (mms://something) and paste it in the Open URL
command.That's about it.

I guess you could also open a .asx file in it (leading to a streaming
content) providing that the file is already on your Mac.WMP being
buggy as hell, .asx files fail fairly often,

Yes, if you use the mms:// link through the Open URL command.
