Media Library Problems
Still Looking 08.07.2007 16:46:01
Hi,

I have WMP 11. I like to rip my DVD's to the HDD to watch later. I also
have and extensive collection of avi files. I have noticed that the music
portion of the library can connect to an online database and download all
info pertaining to that song or album. Is there a plugin or feature to have
the video portion the library do the same thing? I have also noted that
adding a description to the videos is very limited as well.

I have found windows media player a great tool for monitoring folders and
such, it just seems incomplete for such an advanced piece of software.

Any suggestions?

The online DVD lookup seems to work, but there doesn't seem to be an
option to store the DVD identity in the media library

I imagine that's because the DVD can be removed from the drive, and US
law is intended to prevent you exercising your fair use rights to
backup your media.

What about avi files? Examples would be DivX or WM files. when I add these
to the library there is no feature allowing me to go out to an online
database or much of a feature to add description and details of that sort. I
really could use a plugin for this and am unable to find one. :(

Well, let's think about that for a moment.

How do you suppose this online database would be able to identify the
contents of the AVI file ? It could have come off your camcorder, or
been recorded by a set top box or a digital stills camera. It might
have been converted by somebody from another file type entirely,
without any accompanying metadata. Doesn't work, does it ?

In other movie database software you can look at the IMDB or other such
places without Metadata. This is done by title only. It's then up to you to
know your movie well enough to choose the right one. Those programs launch a
script that will connect with the online database and then retrieve the one
title or several depending on your movie. This is very helpful when
converting old VHS to an AVI container. It then imports all pertinent
information on that movie, IE: actors genre, year, description, etc etc..
Since I use WMP to play back all my media, be it movies or music I was
hoping to find a solution within WMP itself or a plugin.

Pehaps this is the sort of stuff which might be useful to you, IMDB is
mentioned in the change log : http://www.whereisit-soft.com/

Do let us know how you get on.
