Windows Media Player has Stopped Working.
Richard 09.07.2007 09:20:01
I am running Vista Home Premium on my laptop. Media Player was working fine
until one day, it refused to open. It just comes up with a pop-up saying it
has stopped working, and is checking for a solution. It has never worked
since.
VLC media player has poor HD image quality, and Winamp's media library
doesn't seem to be working. I've tried all sorts of sneaky and seemingly
dangerous ways of making it work. I want media player back or the next
computer I'm buying will be a Mac. And I'll never turn back to windows again.

i dont know the solution to this but just wanted to let you know that i started having the *exact* same problem starting two days ago. so i called Sony but didn't help me much. they gave me two options. -*first option*, go to 'system restore' and choose a restore point of when you know WMP was working. *my* computer only had restore points from today so that didn't help because the problem started two days ago. i have no idea why restore points from previous dates don't show up. since i wasn't able to do this option, i don't know if restoring your system to a previous date will make a difference with WMP or not. let me know if it does. -*second option*, they said to do a system recovery, AKA, wipe everything clean and re-install windows. i was pissed when they suggested that. i got my laptop two months ago and i have two months worth of settings, tweaks, music, etc. of course i could create back-up discs but that will still take me at least 6-8 hours of my time to make my laptop the exact same way it is right now. according to sony, those are the only two ways get WMP to start working again, which i think is total BS. there's got to be an easier way to get WMP to start working again without using system restore or re-installing windows. anyways, make sure to reply and let us know if system restore worked for you. -- lndrtm

it's me again. i actually found the reason why WMP stopped working, for me at least, and wanted to let you know. did you by any chance install a program called 'satellite tv for pc'? as soon as i uninstalled that program, bam, WMP starts working immediately. -- lndrtm

They fixed that in their latest version (2007), but their 2006 version is so
bad in this regards that their recommendation is to reinstall Vista to fix
what they did.

luckily nothing crashed for me. i was just getting a message saying exactly what the title of the post is: "Windows Media Player has stopped working", "windows is checking for a solution.......". didn't get any error message # or anything like that. i'm not sure what version i had but as soon as i uninstalled Satellite TV for PC, WMP started working immediately.
