Streaming Audio + WMP + IE7 Doesn't Work
hurricane1951[ at ]gmail.com 12.07.2007 00:46:22
I'm having a very weird problem, Actually, my brother is having it and
I'm trying to troubleshoot it long-distance, so it's been a laborius
process.

Windows XP SP2
IE 7
WMP 11

He can listen to streaming audio EXCEPT when the web site uses its own
web-based media player. Then he no audio but, and this is the weird
part, we can see the video stream.

If he goes to a site that launches his local copy of WMP, the audio's
fine. Many Internet radio stations do this.

Here's an example of a streaming audio site that doesn't work:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/player?station=espn&launch=true

If he logs in to MLB.tv to watch a game, he can see the video but not
hear the audio.

He's uninstalled then reinstalled WMP, but that hasn't helped. He's
got a relatively clean system, but I don't know if it is a recent
problem or has existed since Windows was reinstalled from scratch,
since I never tested streaming audio on it.

That player goes through 3 levels of nested playlist, but eventually
resolves to mms://win20ca.audiovideoweb.com/va92winlive2420

WMP11 no longer supports mms URLs, however the http or rtsp URLs
should work OK : Use File -> Open URL in the media player menu.

http://win20ca.audiovideoweb.com/va92winlive2420
rtsp://win20ca.audiovideoweb.com/va92winlive2420

It's using the standard WMA9.1 mono audio codec (20kbps) which is
built in to media player 11.

HTH
Cheers - Neil

OK, that seems like a workaround, but it doesn't explain why I'm able
to use WMP11 and he's not.

Would rolling it back to WMP10 be an answer for him?
