Sending Attachments (.doc or .wps)
Dhana 11.07.2007 04:46:03
Hello,

I have searched all the topics and have yet to find one that addresses my
particular situation. Here it is...

I am working with Windows Mail and have tried to send both .doc and .wps
files as attachments but keep getting error messages (server has dropped the
connection). The strange thing is, is that I can send pictures of similar
size (approx 500 Kb) as attachments but not these types of files.

I have set Windows Mail as a default program. I have also turned off AVG
anti-virus program completely. Vista Basic came with Norton, which I
uninstalled before installing AVG, so the only other programs I have running
that might be affecting this are Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. I
have contacted my service provider and they have assured me that everything
is properly set up.

Thanks for your time!

For the record, here's the exact error message I get:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Recruitment Letter', Account: 'pop.telus.net', Server:
'smtp.telus.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 Error: timeout
exceeded', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F

When you uninstalled Norton, did you run this tool?

Although you have uninstalled Norton, from the error message it sure
looks like some security program remnant is interfering with sending.
Try deleting that mail account, then recreate it.

Thanks for your advice, however, neither of the above worked for me. I ran
the tool that completely uninstalls any of the Norton remnants and then
deleted and reinstated my windows mail account.

I also tried changing some of the settings on the firewall and defender. Any
other suggestions?

In order to pin down the source of this problem, the next step would
be to install a different email program, for testing purposes. This
would tell you whether the fault is in Windows Mail or elsewhere.
Basically, you have two good choices:

Either Windows Live Mail:

or Mozilla Thunderbird:

I have tried sending these same documents through both hotmail and my
college email account and they will not upload, so now I am led to believe
that there's something wrong with the files. Should I now post in a different
forum?

Thanks again.

When you attach a file, make sure it is not open in some other program.
For example, a .DOC file could be open in Word.

Try sending different types of attachments, one at a time. First,
a .TXT file, then a .JPG file, etc. Do different file types behave differently?

Both the .txt and .jpeg files send with no problem. It seems to be worse
today... there is no activity (no green bar marking progress at all).

I tried reseting all my internet options because it seems like it might be
related to Internet Explorer since I can't get it to send through windows
mail, or any of my webmail accounts.

I'm frustrated to say the least and not sure what I should do next...

Strange that .txt and .jpeg attachments send with no problem,
yet .doc or .wps won't send. Perhaps it is related to the size of
the attachment?
I'm beginning to think it's your ISP, especially when you say
some days are slower than others.

The size of the attachments are approx. 500 Kb, so very small. I will try to
change my ISP and see if that helps at all.

Turns out it was a modem problem all along... Problem is finally fixed and
email if working properly for the first time since Monday.

Thanks so much for all your time Gary.
