If it was a 'recovery' CD, it most likely will not run on your new computer.. many are BIOS locked, only installable on the machine with which they were supplied.. OEM genuine MS CDs are tied to the old machine too.. a full retail XP CD would be OK..
BUT
Your new machine may not have XP drivers available for all internal devices.. check with the computer manufacturer first..
You might also want to check with the 'school' software authors for fixes enabling the software to be run on Vista..
