Client setup wizard
gergy9 01.07.2007 03:08:02
I have not been able to use the SBS Network Configuration Wizard since i
reinstaled R2 because the update server did not work. Now the update server
works but i get the following error for client setup. Please help!

Note: Both of the suggestions in the below error i have done. Neither work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
An error occured while tryint to copy the Client Setup files. Check the
following, and then try again:

If you use a public proxy server to browse the Internet, clear the Internet
Explorer connection setting for using the proxy server. To do this, from the
Tools Menu, Click Internet Options, Click the Connections tab, click the LAN
Setting button, and then clear the check box in Proxy Server.

If you do not have a public proxy configured for Internet Explorer, then
your network administrator must reinstall the CLient Deployment component on
the server. To do this, from ADD or Remove Programs, run Windows Small
Business Server Setup in maintenance mode, and then run Client Setup again.

Hello,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that when you run the client setup wizard,
you get error. If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Please let me know the following information to make the situation more
clearly:

1. Do all workstations or some specific workstation have the problem?

Based on my research on issue, please take the following steps to see if
the problem can be resolved:

Step 1: Try to login as administrator on one of the client computer, will
you still get the error message?

Step 2: Please make a clean boot to make sure the problem is not caused
third party software:

1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
4. Click OK and choose Restart.
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

Step 3: Please disjoin and rejoin the workstation to the domain:

1. Disjoin the domain (change the client from the domain to a workgroup
again) and
restart the computer.
2. Remove the computer account from Active Directory Users and Computers on
the
SBS server.
3. Recreate the computer account from Server Management > Client Computers
on the
SBS server.
4. Disconnect all mapped drives on the client.
5. Re-try going to http://server/connectcomputer to do the Client Setup.

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

1. Screen shot of the error message when you run the Client setup wizard.

2. MPS Report

1) Download the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE from the following link and then run
this tool to gather some information from the problematic computer:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE
2) Double-click on the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE file.
[Note] This process may take some time; however, it will not have a
negative effect on the performance.
3) A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.
4) Please send the CAB to me.

3. Please send me the SBSClietApps.log. The log locates at:
%sbsprogramdir%\Clients\SBSClientApps.log

Please send the information to v-robeli[ at ]microsoft.com with subject:
39759033-Client setup wizard.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your reply.

Please take the following step:

Step 1: From the screen shot, I found the client is Windows Vista. Please
ensure you have installed the following hotfix:

Step 2: If you installed Widows 2003 SP2, please disabled RSS and Task
offload from Internal Card
Link followed:
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/04/24/common-networking-issues-aft
er-applying-windows-server-2003-sp2-on-sbs.aspx

Step 3: Please logon as another user account, will the same issue reoccur?

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply

From the information "You may not be a member of the local administrators
security group on this computer." Please take the following steps:

Step 1: Please double check your IE security settings. Because SBS Network
Configuration Wizard is an ActiveX control which will be downloaded from
server to client while running start.htm, if the security settings for
ActiceX control is "denied", you can not run it.

You may add the SBS 2003 server's IP address or FQDN to the clients' Local
Intranet zone:

a. On a client computer, start Internet Explorer.

b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

c. On the Security tab, click Local intranet zone, and then click Sites.

d. Click Advanced.

e. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the ConnectComputer
server's IP address or the ConnectComputer server's FQDN
(servername.domainname.local), and then click Add.

Note You must type the ConnectComputer server's IP address or the
ConnectComputer server's FQDN in the http://IP address or http://FQDN
format.

6. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.

Additional information:

838431 You receive an error message when you try to join your computer to a
Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=838431

Step 2: Do the same thing on Vista.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

RE: Client setup wizard
v-robeli[ at ]online.microsoft.com (Robert Li [MSFT]) 13.07.2007 12:01:53
Hi,

Thanks for your information,

The problem maybe caused by corrupt connectcomputer Virtual Directory,
please reinstall ConnectComputer and see if it helps:

A. Go to IIS and expand servername -> Web Sites -> Default Web Site.
Delete the ConnectComputer vdir.
B. Rename the C:\Inetpub\ConnectComputer folder.
C. Create new folder named ConnectComputer under C:\Inetpub.
D. Copy all the files from the SBS2K3 media
cd3:\SBS\ClientSetup\ClientSetup to the C:\Inetpub\ConnectComputer
directory. Make sure to remove the "Read-only" attributes from the files.
E. Right-click on Default Web Site in IIS, choose New -> Virtual Directory.
F. In the Alias field, type in ConnectComputer and click Next.
G. In the path box, browse to C:\Inetpub\ConnectComputer.
H. Click Next through the wizard, the default permissions are the default
for ConnectComputer.
I. Once it is completed, right-click on ConnectComptuer and select
Properties.
J. Click Remove for the "Application name" under the "Application
settings" at the bottom of the Virtual Directory tab.
K. Click on the Directory Security tab, click Edit for "Authentication
and access control".
L. Uncheck "Integrated Windows authentication", click OK.
M. Click on the Edit button on the "IP address and domain name
restrictions".
N. Put the bullet next to "Denied access" and then click Add.
O. Add 127.0.0.1 and the internal subnet (192.168.16.2/255.255.255.0 is
the default). Click OK.
P. Click OK out of the ConnectComputer properties.

Hope this helps.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

<Thanks for your reply
<
<From the information "You may not be a member of the local administrators
