SBS2003 SMTP Connector
"Rob B." <noton[ at ]use.net> 01.07.2007 04:51:12
I have a problem getting outbound mail sent. I just sits there on the
server until it eventually generates an undeliverable message.

Current system is SBS2003, SP2.

For outbound mail, I am required to authenticate to server

smtpout.someserver.net through port 3535.

This is to avoid relay restrictions imposed by my ISP. I am at a loss how
to configure the SBS2003 SMTP connector, though.

All help appreciated.

Rerun the CEICW and when you get to the email part of it, select smarthost
and enter your info.

Thanks, Claus. I found there is a bit more to the solution, so for the
benefit of others, here we go...

To recap, the situation is my ISP (e.g., abc.net) does not allow mail
relaying, so I cannot send e-mail with my domain name (e.g., me[ at ]xyz.com)
through the hosting company where my xyz.com domain resides. My hosting
company is aware of the problem and established a port other than port 25
where I can send my outbound mail. So long as it is not on port 25, abc.net
is oblivious.

In addition to a non-standard port, the hosting company's outbound mail
server requires authenticating to the server before it will accept the mail.

The issue is how to configure the SBS SMTP connector to make this all work.
CEICW does not have a place to enter smarthost (outbound mail sever) port or
authentication information, although you can enter the smarthost address.
To enter port and authentication information:

Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Exchange -> System Manager

Now expand Servers -> yourserver -> Protocols -> SMTP

Right-click on Default SMTP Virtual Server -> Properties -> Delivery tab

Select Outbound Security -> Basic Authentication and enter the user name and
password required to authenticate to the SMTP server. Click OK.

Select Outbound Connections and enter the port number your hosting service
tells you to use. Click OK.

Select Advanced. Enter your fully qualified domain name, e.g., joyful.com
and click Check DNS to make sure it is working. Enter the Smart Host, which
is your outbound SMTP server. Click OK.

Click Apply. Click OK.

+++++++++++++++++++
The only part I do not like about this is Basic Authentication sends
passwords in the clear.
