Blackberry Enterprise Server Express and SBS 2003 STD
"Rick F" <rick.REMOVE[ at ]REMOVE.rdfts.com> 29.06.2007 23:58:09
Has anyone installed this on SBS?
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/server/offers/express.jsp

Before I get flamed about why not just use a WM5 device, I have for this
client. He tried a Q and Treo 700w and didn't like them. Someone tells him
to get a Blackberry and now tells me to set it up. I've explained to him
that the Outlook redirector isn't the best solution and he needs BES from my
research. He doesn't want to spend $1099 for the SBS version. I setup
Windows Mobile phones all the time for other clients so I definitely prefer
going that route. Client pays me, so guess I am going to learn the BB way.
:-)

Because it's SBS Standard, I do have a router firewall device that connects
directly to the Internet and there is two NIC's in SBS. Is there anything
that needs to be done to direct any ports to the server, ports to open via
any SBS wizards?

Any pointers from those that have used the BB Express software?

Thanks,
Rick F

BES works like a charme on SBS. I have about 30 clients with it.
Installation is easy and straight forward. If your client owns a BB, the BES
Express is free with one license. Every additional license is $99. The
Express version is identical to the full version with the only limitation of
max 15 users.

There is one little annoyance with the newest 4.1 (SP4) version. It installs
Apache for it's interface and every time you reboot your server or the ISA
for that matter, the Apache will show up when users try to access the
internet. The trick is to have the MDS service start after the ISA services.
I have tried to make it dependant on something that starts later. So far I
haven't found a reliable one. So for all clients we set the MDS service to
manual and start it after the server has booted. But even if you don't get
to the server right away, it's not a big deal as MDS only handles the
attachment feature.

Nah we'd only flame ya if you asked about iPhone.

;-)

Blackberries are fine on SBS as Claus indicates.

It's SBS Standard so don't have ISA. What does Apache do to the CompanyWeb
and Sharepoint? Any ports that have to be open?

Company web works fine. Port 3101 needs to be opened.

I have one site using the Express version, but I chickened out and put it on

Open on the firewall router and pointing to the external NIC on SBS, I
assume? And re-run the Internet Wizard to open the port?

You're assuming right.

As to the ISA, you don't have to re-run the CEICW. You just create 2 new
TCPIP protocols (3101in and 3101out) and then create the 2 rules
accordingly. Apply the changes and you are done.

Claus, I have pretty much the same situation and the problem I'm having is
get the BES to access the srp.us.blackberry.net in the Blackberry Server
Configuration on the Blackberry Router tab. I've added the two protocols
like you stated and then add the rules. BBIn uses 3101in and the From is
External and To is Internal. BBOut is the opposite. Am I missing something?

Thanks.
