Vista and SB2003
"Jonathan Crawford" <jc[ at ]jcrawford.co.uk> 30.06.2007 06:40:59

Hi

We run SBS 20003 and about half a dozen xp pro clients.

We bought our first Vista Business PC.
We couldn't connect it to the domain.

We have tried connecting using //servername/connectcomputer and
http://servername/connectcomputer and http://ipaddress/connectcomputer
with a variety of low security settings and trusted domain settings for IE
The error is about needing to be logged in as an administrator on the client
machine to join the domain (which we are)

We did our research.
We downloaded the white paper.
We installed the vista mui on the client machine
We tried to install the SBS2003 Vista patch on the server but it denied us
because it was missing a service pack
We couldn't install service pack1 or 2 becuase of an error "failed to
install catalogue files"
Eventually installed service pack two after applying methods
1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9, from kb 822798
We installed SBS Service Pack two and SP2 security patches
Tried to apply Vista pack but it said it was either included in previous
service pack or we had the wrong service pack
Still couldn't connect computer to domain and no sign of new Vista group
policy on SBS.
We unistalled SP2 and installed SP1
Produced an error "update.exe application error, the istruction at #######
referenece memory at ### could not be written"
(where ## is a bunch of hex)
Server then turned evil, no event log, no browser, couldn't add or remove
programmes
Rebooted and the evil had been exorcised but still couldn't run vista patch.

So to recap
We have spent two days going nowhere and massively disrupting the newtork
We have developed a profound dislike of vista
We really don't know what to do.

Should we reinstall SP2? Can someone give us the details of the Vista group
policy? Can it be applied to SBS with SP2?

Please help.

Thanks

jc

I don't think you installed SBS 2003 sp1 which is the five part patch.

You still don't have the Vista ripcurl

Now you can manually join the Vista box or try again ...but first
install SBS 2003 sp1.

What do you feel up to?

Hi
We did install 2003 sp1
Ie the patch that calls itself SBS1 and is a couple of hundred megabytes
There were no five parts to it though. Do you know where this other patch
is. We had trouble finding one as two was out

I will look for the rip curl.

I still haven't sent the packaging of the new machine
to recycling as I may send it back. It has cost us more
trrying to set it up then it's purchase price.

thanks

jc

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/downloads/sp1/default.mspx
*Downloading the service pack*. The download for Windows SBS SP1
includes the service packs necessary for the Standard Edition of Windows
SBS 2003. As a part of this process, you must download five separate
files, which could take a considerable amount of time depending upon the
speed of your Internet connection. If any of service packs 1-4 are
already installed, it is not necessary to do so again.

1. Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server® 2003 operating system
2. Windows SharePoint® Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
3. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
4. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
5. Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1

If you have ANY questions at all, PLEASE holler.. I'm heading to bed now
but will be back online tomorrow.

What does Vista give you over XP? Why would you bother with such a bad bad
bad product?

Hello Susan, Sorry but I have to disagree... Also there are 2 threads going
on from this OP.

You mention 'event viewer' great but you have manually configure Vista GPO
on SBS to 'manage' computers. It should be there by default, very poor
support from Microsoft. A new user of SBS has Vista clients and wants to
administer his Vista clients well he cant (can with XP by default) has to
research, investigate and finds oh, Microsoft forgot to add that component
in its SBS/Vista update.

GPO.. again, Vista default GPO has very little what is expected i.e from XP
default GPO, evryone has to learn GPO to get VIsta working when I thought
SBS was wizards and does the majority of the 'basic ' configurations for
you.

Vista is a nightmare, if you remember we had a thread discussing even your
issue with Vista and I pointed out a possible issue with restore point but
haven't had time to fully retest as removed 30+ Vista from clients and SP2
nightmares. Such a big issue thought Microsoft would have picked up on that
thread, or is they haven't responded because they found he same issue, as I
would of expected a post from someone saying no probs their end.

Im sorry but my advise to the OP is not to install Vista, he will have a
mountain to climb. User support (new for them too), not intergrated into SBS
properly.

I fixed my Vista (see blog) and it was an inplace upgraded Vista over
the top of XP that I wouldn't recommend to clients.

Install clean.
I didn't.
I paid the price.

Have you posted in the Vista newsgroup? They wouldn't comment on Vista
in this one.

My point is many times people complain we get off on tangents in this
newsgroup is all.

BTW the Vista ripcurl update gives you the interface to manage Vista
clients.. it's on MU
You have to open up the vista gpo from a vista machine.

It's not that they forgot, it's that it has to be controlled from a
vista workstation.

Ensure you go to MU and get the Vista/Outlook update as it does have the
basics already configured.
