Hi you all; I have a SBS 2003 running a small intranet in my office. There are seven other computers running xp pro I can connect to the server from the other pc’s running either rdc or rww. I can even connect to the server from computers outside my intranet within the office. I have setup all the necessary ports in the router for RDC (3389, 4125, 443) and checked the firewall to allow the ports for connection. I have one laptop I use to connect to the server in the office, but the same laptop does not connect from home. By accident, I found that having one computer on outside my intranet in the office I can easily connect to the server from home. This computer was used before to connect to another office running Real VNC software. I checked all the network card settings in this computer against my server to match it all and still I cannot make from home. Help please Thanks.

Hi Jorgito,
Thanks for posting here.
From the description, I understand the issue is that you cannot connect to SBS server from home via RDC or RWW. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Let us refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:
I am not sure how you use RDC, Please first open http://SBSserver/remote, RWW can be accessed?
In addition, you should use telnet public ip 4125,not telnet public ip. If you don't specify port,by default,It points to 23. But we should check 4125,not 23
I appreciate your time. I am happy to be of assistance and look forward to your reply.
Have a nice day!

Hi Jacky, thanks for your answer. by the way, the link you gave is dead. you are correct, I cannot connect to my server from home despite all the configurations I mentioned before. Also I did specify the port 4125 in the telnet test and resolved nothing. I use RDC in my client computer by pointing to start menu/all programs/ accesories/ communications/ RDC. when rdc opens I type the static IP address, fill in the pertaining information and i does not connect

Hi Jorgito,
Thanks for posting back.
Please first open http://FQDN/remote, RWW can be accessed?
Note:The FQDN means public domain name of your SBS server.
1.In addition,Please disable windows firewall or other third party firewall to see if it helps.
2.If issue persists,Please perform clean boot.
Clean boot =========== 1. Click Start -> Run 2. Input msconfig and click OK. 3. Click Service Tab and check Hide all Microsoft Services and click Disable All. 4. Click Startup Tab and click Disable All. 5. Click OK and reboot the computer and test again.
In addition,It is possible ISP have blocked the 4125 network traffic.
If issue persists,Please help me collect Netmon Trace Log on both these two machines(problematic client and SBS server) ================== a. Download and install netmon2 on these two machines(problematic client and SBS server).
1) Download the ZIP file at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/pss/tools/netmon/netmon2.zip (about 4MB). 2) Extract the files in netmon2.zip to a folder:
[Note] The password is trace. The installation will fail if you directly run the execute file within netmon2.zip.
How to record network traffic ----------------------------------------- 1. Start Netmon from "Administrative Tools > Network Analysis Tools > Network Monitor" 2. You will see the Select a network window. On problematic client, select the local network adapter,On SBS server, select the external NIC.
3. Click Buffer Settings on the Capture menu, set the Buffer Size (MB) to 50 4. Click "Capture > Start" to start record network traffic
5. On problematic client, RDC to SBS server 6. When you notice the connection fails, switch back to Netmon, click "Stop and View" on the Capture menu. 7. Click File >> Save as, type a file name and click Save. 8. Send the log file to me. It records all network activity since start.
Please send the two logs file to me at v-jaluo[ at ]microsoft.com
Have a nice day!

Hi Jacky; I follow your instruction and I still cannot connecto from home. I even reconfigure the connect to the internet wizard. I sent the two files from netmon as you asked. I hope you'd get them. One thing I don't know for sure is wether the 4125 port is unblocked for network traffic. If you kindly tell me how to check it out. one more thing, this might help. I have tried to run the remote access configuration wizard, and it doesn't finish it. At the end it generates this message " An error ocurred while configuring remote access for the routing and remote access service. For details see, c:\program files\microsoft small business server\support\rraslog.txt, and then rerun the remote access wizard". I opened this file txt and it says that it cannot delete a temp folder. the folder name changes everytime.

Well, I figured out my problem, I just don't have the solution yet I rerun the IECW and disabled the firewall. Only then I could RDC from home. However, with that setting my intranet stopped working properly. Client computer could not rdc from the intranet, could not logon onto our internal website, could not run the apps my intranet is setup for. when turning computers on it takes them long time to logon on to the server. those are the issues I noted so far. So I have to rerun IECW to enable the wizard firewall and then my intranet runs to perfection. The IECW find the network router and configures itself. I double check it to make sure of the settings. All the pertaining port are open, and still cannot rdc from away. I need to know if is possible to manually configure the IECW firewall.

Hi Jorgito,
Thanks for posting back.
Before we can go further,Please collect the following information to me:
What's your SBS version? Is there ISA installed?
you can manually configure ISA, check all the firewall pocily to see if any rule block the RDC access.
As to CEICW,you can refer to the following KB to configure.
Reference:
825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763
If issue still occur,Please send me ISA info and ISA log.
Gather ISA info to check whether ISA configuration is OK.
1. ISA info:
a. Download the file from the following URL: http://www.isatools.org/isainfo/ISAInfo.zip b. Extract all files to a folder on ISA server c. Double click Isainfo.js. This will generate 2 files ISAInfo2004-<computer-name>.log and ISAInfo2004-<computer-name>.xml in the current folder. d. Please send these files to me. 2. ISA logs:
Enable the full Web Proxy/firewall logging option: a. Open ISA 2004 management console. b. Expand the server node and highlight 'Monitoring'. c. In the right pane, switch to the 'Logging' tab, make sure the 'Task Pane' is showed there. d. In the 'Task Pane', click 'Configure Web Proxy Logging' under 'Logging Tasks', and then switch the 'log storage format' from 'MSDE database' (default) to 'File'. e. Switch to the 'Fields' tab, and then click 'Select All'. f. Click OK, and then click 'Apply' to save changes and update the configuration. g. Click 'Configure Firewall Logging'. Do step d~f to enable the full logging options for firewall logging.
Prepare to take the trace: a. Temporarily stop the Firewall service to clear the current existing W3C logs: Monitoring->Services tab, and then right click 'Microsoft Firewall' to choose 'Stop'. b. Go to the log saving directory and clean any existing .W3C logs. By default, the logs will be saved to 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\ISALogs'. (Some MDF may not be able to deleted, that's normal.) c. Go back to the ISA 2004 management console, and then Start the stopped 'Microsoft Firewall' service.
Reproduce the problem: a. Reproduce the issue for at least 3 times. b. Go back to the ISA server. Stop the 'Microsoft Firewall' service. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the ISA log file folder. Collect the recent w3c files. Save them to a zip package as 'isalogs.zip'. Start the 'Microsoft Firewall' Service. c. Send the zip packages to me.
[Note] Please send all info to v-jaluo[ at ]Microsoft.com
Have a nice day!

Ok, I finally figured out my problem. not before researching the web all over like crazy! I had installed server 2003 SP2 in my SBS 2003. I learned that SBS 2003 SP2 is not out yet! I thought it was the same for both. So I uninstalled SP2 and the whole ordeal it takes to. after that, I believed SP1 was gonna take charge. It didn't, because it was nowhere to be found in the server (strange because I thought SP1 was installed by default. so no problem, I downloaded SBS 2003 Server SP1 and Installed it. It did not install clean the first time, tried second time and was ok then. now my intranet is working to perfection, rww works as well and also rdc now from home. However, rdc seems to have login hours issues. not all the time I can rdc from home especially at night, any Ideas? additionally now I seem to have SharePoint problems. Whenever I want to log on to the intranet website I get a message saying that SharePoint needs to be configured and I get lost then. I appreciate your help ""Jacky Luo [MSFT]"" wrote:

Hi Jorgito,
This is Robert, Jacky is taking long leave and we are facing very high volume. I am sorry for the delay.
I know that the RDP began to work, but not all the time. Please let me know the following information:
1. When you cannot RDP, what's the detail error message?
2. Do other users have the same problem when you failed to RDP?
3. Can you RDP to the server all the time on the LAN?
4. When the problem occurs, run the following command, can you see error message?
Ping IP-SBSserver telnet IP-SBSserver 3389
Also, the problem may be related to the network traffic. I have a similar problem before, RDP stops working ramdomly, when he changed the connection to higher speed, the issue disappeared.
For your SharePoint problem, please understand that our newsgroup is an issue based service, meaning we usually respond to one question/issue per post. This will lessen the confusion for both of us, as well as ensure that our results are accurate and not a result of a test for a different question. Therefore, it is recommended you create a new thread so that the dedicated MS engineer can help you on it. Thank you for your understanding!
I am looking forward to hear from you.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)

Hi Robert; Thanks for helping. This is what I've learned. First, I fixed the sharepoint issue, thank you anyways. whenever I enable the internet connection wizard firewall, I cannot RDC from home. Disable it, and I'm home free. One time I did fine with firewall enabled, but it didn't last long. So any of you get the idea of my problem? Because as much as I've tried by changing setttings, I know the issue is with firewall. It's not about ports or credentials. I just want to know how to handle The internet conncetion wizard firewall. Thanks. obert Li [MSFT]" wrote:

Hi Jorito,
Thanks for your updating.
Please let me know the following:
1. After uninstalled SP2, did you rerun CEICW successfully? Did you enable the firewall when run the wizard?
2. Just double confirm, is the rdp only works when firewall is disabled?
If the CEICW fails, please help me collect:
1. c:\program files\microsoft small business server\support\icwlog.txt 2. Screen shot of error message when you run CEICW.
Please send the information to v-robeli[ at ]microsoft.com with subject: 37394675- RDC Cannot connect from home.
To check if the problem is closed by ISP, we can do a simple test:
At the hours when you cannot RDP to SBS from home, connect a laptop to the external NIC of SBS, can you RDP successfully, if so , the problem is caused by ISP.
Please try the suggestions and let me know the result.
I am looking forward to hear from you.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)

Hi Robert Li; Yes I run the CEICW successfully and enabled firewall. RDC seems to work only when firewall is disabled. The CEICW hasn't failed ever. I've tried the laptop test before. The same laptop I took home and then I could not rdc from home. If It is isp thing, How do I go by solving it?

Hi Jorito,
Thanks for your updating.
If the test shows the problem is caused by the ISP, you can contact the ISP for better network speed. Since the problem happen especially at night, perhaps at that period more people use Internet and the traffic is more slowly.
Hope the information helps.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)
