FTP
Scott 26.06.2007 03:11:00
Hi all,
I manage a site running an SBS2003r2 server, using two NIC's. (Server local
area connection & Network connection). The site uses a 3rd party program that
runs on 4 of their XP Pro sp2 clients. One function of this software is to
FTP to an external server for document transfers. As I only replaced the
server I know that the client configuration & the Cisco router at the gateway
are not preventing the clients from connecting to the FTP server. The
previous server was an SBS2000 server & it ran ISA.
How do I configure the new server to allow the clients to FTP out? I can FTP
to the external FTP server from the SBS2003 server.
I did try changing the Basic firewall configuration in the RRAS settings
with no joy.
Please assist.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that you have an SBS server and 4 Windows XP
clients with third party software. One function of this software is to
FTP to an external server for document transfers.
After you replaced the older SBS 2000 with ISA, the clients cannot ftp out.
If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

By default, the SBS server allows the workstations to ftp out. Please first
ftp out with IE on the workstation, will this work fine? If this works, the
problem is related to third party software, please contact the software
manufacture for more help.

If you cannot ftp out with IE on the client workstation, please try the
following:

Step 1: Please follow the wizard to configure the network and basic
firewall settings.

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

Step 2: Use Internet Explorer as FTP client. Test the FTP access in the
following two scenarios:

1. Check 'Enable folder view for FTP site' option; uncheck 'Use Passive
FTP' option (The IE will work in Active mode FTP)

2. Uncheck 'Enable folder view for FTP site' option; check 'Use Passive
FTP' option (The IE will work in Passive mode FTP)

309816 How To Configure Internet Explorer to Use Both the FTP PORT Mode and
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309816

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

1. Screen shot of the error message when you cannot ftp out with IE on
workstation.

2. Do you have ISA?

3. Use the networking MPS report to collect the client workstation event
logs and configuration info for further analysis

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the client workstation.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me.

Please send me the information to v-robeli[ at ]microsft.com with subject:
39710758-FTP.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

Hi Robert,
The issue was with the Application Gateway Service being started. What is

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your reply.

By default Application Layer Gateway Service is set to manually started and
stopped. You can start it to see if the problem can be resolved:

I'd like to give you the following information about Application Layer
Gateway Service.

Description:

This subcomponent of the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) / Internet
Connection Firewall (ICF) service provides support for independent software
vendors (ISVs) to write protocol plug-ins that allow their proprietary
network protocols to pass through the firewall and work behind ICS.
Application Layer Gateway plug-ins have the power to open ports and change
data (such as ports and IP addresses) embedded in packets. File Transfer
Protocol (FTP) is the only network protocol that has a plug-in shipping
with Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition and Windows Server 2003
Enterprise Edition.

The service listens for outgoing FTP traffic from an FTP client. It
extracts the port that the FTP client is expecting to receive data from and
creates an appropriate dynamic port mapping for the FTP data channel

If this service is disabled, the Internet Connection Firewall and Internet
Connection Sharing service will not start. The ALG service will start when
set to manual if the Internet Connection Firewall and Internet Connection
Sharing service is started.

Startup type: Manual

Service status: Stopped

Systems

Hope the information helps.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
