Hi there,
I have a network with SBS 2003 running on it and that is the only server. We have another SBS 2003 server that we want to add to the network as a file server only. Is this possible? I know that you can't have 2 SBS servers on the domain, but can you have 2 on the same LAN?
Could I set the second one up as a new domain and then mirror permissions (user/pass) or is it possible to not have a SBS 2003 server as a domain controller or even on a domain?
Cliff notes: Need 2 SBS servers on the same LAN so customers can access both. Possible?
Thanks in advance everyone! :)

You bought the wrong software. Why not Windows Server 2003 as the 2nd server?

SBS -must be- the root of forest in a single domain with no sub-domains and cannot do trusts.
So, yes you can have 2 SBServers on the LAN in different subnets and use Pass Through Authentication ( Same User details and passphrases in each ) That however means 2 Sets of CALs and double the maintenance which IMHO in TCO terms isn't worth what you think you are saving in not buying Windows Server.

Thanks for the quick response.
Yeah the customer bought the wrong software and they're stuck with it now, that is why we're trying to make this work...

Thanks for the quick response.
So they have to be on different subnets as well? I mean I couldn't turn DHCP off?
Thanks! BB

It'll always be a kludge, a nightmare to admin and maintain. Nothing but trouble for you and them.
Did they buy OEM, or Retail? (Know anybody needing a new SBS server at a smoking good price? )
Find a way to get them the right software (std) properly installed. It'll save them in the long run.

hi Bill,
Yes, they need to be in different subnets. The PC clients will have to be 'rooted' to only 1 SBS at any one moment, and they will be looking to one SBS for DNS resolution. It's possible to access the other SBS through a couple of ways, but then it comes down to, what are they trying to do with the 2nd server - purpose?
It's also much easier to just administer 1 box than 2.

They do not have to be in different subnets and AFAIK if they are on the same ethernet segment there is no advantage to running them in different subnets.
