Hi all,
Using SBS Backup to an external USB drive, all working well, but we are now having some trouble with an old OLD tape drive attached to a separate file server. I'd like to add that server's file shares to my daily SBS backup, but can't seem to find how to do so - any suggestions?
TIA, -- SusanV

SBS is not designed to backup multiple servers You can run NT Backup on that server and backup to a separate hard drive

That's what I thought - my question now is one of scheduling - can 2 instances of NT Backup run at the same time? The SBS backup takes nearly 10 hours, leaving little off-duty hours to run the other backup. I have an internal tape drive on the server which will easily handle the amount of data on the separate server, but would prefer not to install a third party backup product on the SBS server if I can avoid it.
Thanks again Cris!

You would run NTBackup on the second server and have it do its own backup, not the SBS backup running two instances

Ah... but the *good* tape drive is internal on the SBS machine... the secondary server has an ancient external DAT drive which is getting rather persnickety, and I suspect ready to fail. <sigh> No matter, I'll probably end up setting the secondary server to also use external USB or some such.
Thanks again,

you can get a 160gb Simpletech USB drive at SamsClub for 84.00 I have one client where we bought 6 and it was still less than the cost of a good tape drive and the tapes...and they don't have to be replaced every year ;-)

Yeah I just got an excellent deal at Tiger Direct - 320 GB USB IOMEGA, $99.99 each, with a $30 rebate (up to 2 rebates). We got 2, will keep one offsite, swap every other day (2 full backups on each). Looks like I'll have to order a few more - heck, for the storage their cheaper than just the tapes, never mind the tape drive!
I just hate to not use the drive we have on the server for *something* - must be the frugal Yankee in me <g> -- SusanV

As was previously mentioned I think here after Jeff Middleton's New Orleans conference, during the presentation by the Microsoft SBS Product Team on Cougar (at least what they are allowed to tell the public so far), tape will not be supported period by the new native backup program which is part of Windows Server 2008 and thus will be the core of the SBS Backup in Cougar (who knows what this next version will be called yet)

hi Susan,
SBS backup is taking 10 hrs to backup to USB drive? Or did I misunderstand something? I think you also say the SBS has another tape drive.
There is a hard drive vs tape drive discussion takes been going on for some time, still think it is going on. One key issue is that of multiple versions, fragility, transportability, and of course, $$$. HD are dropping in price and increase in size rapidly. Speed contest is settled. If your company is familiar with tape and you have procedures for that, then use USB HD as an additional backup.
BTW, I wonder if the content on the 2nd server can actually be stored on the SBS instead? Then all data can be backup at the same time on the SBS, the data can be read from the 2nd server or from the clients - depends on your setup.
A solution that I'm considering (but it IS extra cost) is to use Microsoft's DPMv2 to backup to HD, and the store the many backup versions to tape (you'll need a larger tape). Might or might not work for you.
HTH, Eugene Tan SBS MVP

There's close to 190 GB of data on the SBS server to back up, and it's actually taking 8.5 hours to be precise, but 10 hours will come soon I'm sure (we do a lot of CAD). The secondary server's data has to be kept separate for security purposes, and can't be moved to the SBS server, it's a contractual thing. <shrug>
I'll order a couple more USB HDs for the second server, not a big deal, just was looking for an option should the tape drive fail in the meantime.
Thanks for your suggestions, -- SusanV
