IMF and SBS
Keith Lawrence MCP 09.07.2007 19:50:02
Does anyone here utilise IMF on their SBS? If so, how do you manage the
configuration and monitoring in day-to-day use?

Ive been reading the IMF Operations Guide
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B1218D8C-E8B3-48FB-9208-6F75707870C2&displaylang=en) and have done some minimal testing.

For anyone who does use it, would you consider it to be a suitable
replacement for 3rd party filtering software or just another level of defense
to be used in combination?

Works great with SBS 2003. As a matter of fact it has nothing to do with SBS
but more with Exchange 2003. Using IMF you can monitor filtered emails. Most
people use RBL's with their IMF Connection filter. Not sure how it works in
combination with other SPAM filtering programs but can say I'm happy with it
and have no issues.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Im aware its an exchange extension and not
specifically SBS. When you say "Using IMF you can monitor filtered emails" do
you mean IMFAM (http://www.codeplex.com/imfam)? If not, what method do you
use to monitor the emails?

Thanks

I use IMF Companion. You can view all filtered emails and thier SCL ratings.
This is good because you can adjust accordingly if legitimate emails
continue to get filtered. Also you can "whitelist" senders and or domains.

In addition you may use the performance monitor. It can help give you a high
level understanding of IMF:
http://www.exchangeinbox.com/articles/021/imf_perfmon.htm

You can also expose the SCL in Outlook:

I had trouble with IMF Companion not working correctly, it was my first
choice because it was free.

I then went to IMF Tune at a few clients and must say I am far more
impressed by it and what it does and can do.

Although it is not free it is not overly expensive and works very well which
is all I really care about in the long run.

I have Trends CSM installed but it just doesn't filter the spam like the
combination of IMF and IMF Tune.

IMF Tune looks great! Ill give it a try thanks.

Ive been using IMFAM (IMF Archive Manager) for a few hours and it looks like
an easy, simple way to control the archive folder without needing to open
every eml file with notepad and examine the contents. IMF Tune looks ot be a
lot more configurable for sure.

Thanks again for the advice.
