SBS 2003 - aarich errors and server slows to a halt
"Andrew" <nospam19[ at ]westnet.com.au> 21.05.2007 07:58:21
Hope someone has some thoughts here. Have a SBS2003 box that just started
(last Thursday at 12:10pm) come up with Event.9 aarich errors in the event
log.

"The Device \device\scsi\aarich1, did not respond within the timeout
period."

If left for too long, about 20mins, the server grinds to a halt (mouse works
and keyboard CAPS/NUMS work) but nothing else. Also when attempting to
shutdown/restart the server it hangs on a grey screen after "Windows is
Shutting Down" disappears.

The machine is an IBM x206 with onboard Adaptec SATA RAID. 2 IBM supplied
(WD) drives configured in a mirror.

IBM have supplied new (old) drivers but problem is not resolved.

After trolling the net come across comments that someone was having similar
problems with a large database on SATA mirrorred drives. Mmm Exchnage is a
database so disabled all the exchange services. Restarted the server (no
hanging on the grey screen) and no more errors in the event logs. Restart
Exchange and the errors start again after about 10 minutes. Antivirus is
disabled at this stage and the server is actually off the network. Exchange
is just under 6Gb, surely SATA RAID can handle this sort of size?

One last comment. the RAID starts rebuilding each time we manually turnoff,
obviously there are services still running in the background.

regards
Andrew

sounds like a performance issue. SBS servers need to be beefier than people
realize. We get dual or quad processors, 2 CPU, and RAID 5 on a Perc card
and that handles a few dozen people. The onboard may not be beefy enough.

The same thing happens even when the server is not on the network. After
further testing tonight have confirmed it's some issue relating to Exchange.
Start Information Store and the errors start to occur (total memory sitting
around 30% and CPU around 5%). Once the errors appear in the logs a few
times you can no longer stop the Information Store either (sits in the
stopping state).

No Exchange and the machine runs a dream, like it has been for 15 months ...
until last Thursday.

Next test will be to install a hard drive and move the exchnage store to
this. Start and see if the issue continues. If not then must be hardware
or RAID driver issue (although there are no newer drivers).

Hopefully I can get this sorted soon.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I have come across exactly the same problem, IBM X series 206 with 2 SATA (160Gb) drives. AARICH1.SYS error in event logs. Initially thought problem was related to hardware then SATA driver and now am not sure if it is a bad block on the HDD, users can access data files from the server but exchange is not accessible unless we reboot server. And a reboot usually results in a grey screen and we end up powering down server.
We are considering a rebuild, but just wanted to know if you have found a resolution. IBM have replaced System Board but still continues to have errors.
OS = Win2K3 SBS SP1, was think about upgrading the SP for Win2k3 + Exchange 2k3.

If you can help, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
