Time synchronization - event ID 14, 29, and 36
Mitch of Reno 27.06.2007 23:42:00
I'm trying to find how to properly configure my SBS server to get accurate
time from an internet source and setup the XP workstations to get their time
from the server. I've found a lot of information that gives hints around
the subject, but nothing that tells how to do it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here. And thanks for Gregg's inputs.

According to your description, I understand that you want to know how to
configure time sync on SBS and XP clients. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the steps in the following KB:

How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=816042

How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314054

A list of the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) time servers that are
available on the Internet
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=262680

If there's anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to let me
know.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Mitch of Reno 28.06.2007 19:34:01
Can you clarify two things. In article 816042 on step 4 of configuring to
use an external time source it says to put in a value of "peers". Is that
just a variable where I should put an NIST or other SNTP URL or IP address
(like time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov or 132.163.4.103) and then append 0x1 to
the end of that?

Second, I want the XP clients to obtain their time from the SBS server, not
from an external source or from internal hardware. Will they pick up the
time from the domain controller after I make the proper modifications. Or do
I need a login script or something to make them pull the time off the SBS
server?

Thank you very much for your help so far.

RE: Time synchronization - event ID 14, 29, and 36
v-terliu[ at ]online.microsoft.com (Terence Liu [MSFT]) 29.06.2007 09:20:04
Hello Mitch,

Thank you for kind update.

1. The registry key NtpServer in the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters
Here is an example: time.windows.com,0x1

Note: Ensure you can resolve this DNS on your SBS.

2. Relative to XP client, the SBS is external time source. You can
following the steps in the KB314054.

Meanwhile, you can configure the XP client computers to sync time from SBS
thru GPO. For your reference:

a. Open SBS Server Management console.

b. Locate "Advanced Management"->"Active Directory Users and
Computers"->domain name.

c. Make sure the computers are located under
MyBusiness\Computers\SBSComputers. If there were computers under Computers,
it means these accounts are created while the computers manually joined
this domain. Please move them to MyBusiness\Computers\SBSComputers. Also,
if you cannot find some computers on the list, create them.

d. Locate "Advanced Management"->"Group Policy
Management"->"Forest:"->"Domains"->domain name

e. Right-click "MyBusiness"->"Computers"->"SBSComputers", select "Create
and Link a GPO Here".

f. Enter the name for this GPO. Right-click the new GPO and then select
"Edit".

g. Locate "Computer Configuration"->"Administrative
Templates"->"System"->"Windows Time Service"->"Time Provider".

h. Open "Configure Windows NTP Client" to configure NTP settings for the
clients.

- NOTE: This policy can only be used on Windows XP Professional and
Windows Server 2003 computers.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

This worked great. Now I have consistent time on our network. I used the
Group policy setup you suggested for the clients. Thanks again for your help!
