Exchange databgase - Integrity verification
Luiz 03.07.2007 12:04:03
Hi,

I have an Exchange 2003 with SP2 installed and configured in my SBS 2003 R2
Premium server.
The problem is when I schedule an backup through ARCServe in document level
(mailbox level) my Information Store stops and I am unable to restart the
service.
I would like to know what switch/es of Isinteg and Eseutil commands must I
use to discover if has a problem with my Exchange database or the problem is
my Backup tool (ARCServe).

Thanks.

Hello Luiz,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that the exchange Information
Store service will stop when you try to back mailbox thru ARCServe. If I
have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, this is a known issue. This problem occurs when the
third-party backup program uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
infrastructure in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to perform the backup.

Note: This problem has been observed when Snapmanager for Microsoft
Exchange by Network Appliance, Inc. is used.

I suggest you contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the
following hotfix and install on SBS to see if we can resolve this issue:

916841 The Exchange Information Store Service stops responding when you try
to back up Exchange Server 2003 by using a third-party program
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=916841

If the issue persists, please also try to install the following hotfix:

892514 The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may stop responding
when you try to back up your Exchange 2003 database files by using a
program that uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=892514

933398 The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not start
successfully on an Exchange 2003 server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=933398

If your exchange information store has corrupted, please try the following
steps to recover it thru Isinteg and Eseutil commands:
272570 How to recover from information store corruption
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=272570

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Save the application event log and system event log as evt files on the
SBS and send to my mailbox: v-terliu[ at ]microsoft.com

2. Please try to backup thru NTbackup, do you get same issue?

3. Please try to reinstall the ARCServe to test this issue.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
