Microsoft Search
"Alex" <aph[ at ]hotmail.co.uk> 09.07.2007 14:23:34
Hi

On an SBS2003 premoum server. I note that in Services, Microsoft Search is
set to Automatic start, yet if i try and click Start, I am getting an error
message: Could not start the Search on the Local Computer - Error 2, could
not find the file specified

File C:\program Files\Common Files\MSSEarch\BIN\mssearch.exe is on the
computer.
i looked at the System Event and found an error 7023. Following the help
I ran sc query microsoft search from the command line.
This tells me that the specified service does not exist as an installed
service.

Can anyone advise me what to do next please?

Thanks
A

Hello Alex,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that when you start Microsoft Search service,
you get error message: Could not start the Search on the Local Computer -
Error 2, could not find the file specified

If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First, the mssearch services may be corrupted, if the problem cannot be
resolved at last, we need to reinstall some component or the system. Thanks
for your understanding.

Based on my research, please take the following steps to see if the problem
can be resolved:

Step 1: By default mssearch.exe locates at File C:\program Files\Common
Files\System\MSSEarch\BIN. But you found that is in File C:\program
Files\Common Files\MSSEarch\BIN.

Please copy the mssearch.exe to C:\program Files\Common
Files\System\MSSEarch\BIN and try again.

Step 2: Please make a clean boot to make sure the problem is not caused
third party software:

1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
4. Click OK and choose Restart.
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

Please save the related event in Application Log of Event Viewer and send
to me.

Please send the information to v-robeli[ at ]microsoft.com with subject:
39830070-Microsoft Search.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

Hi Robert

Thank you for your post - regret to advise that your suggesions didn't make
any difference.

I have also undertaken the following:
I downloaded SQL Server 2000 SP4 and reinstalled. This has had the fefect
that I now see MSSEarch in the SQL Service Manager listof services, whereas
it wasn't there earlier.

I have also renamed the mssearch.exe file and copied a known working copy of
the file from our secondary server, but that has made no difference.

I have found a KB article 827449 and wonde rif I should follow these
instructions and manually reinstall the Microsoft search service?

I have also noticed that when looking at the properties of the Exchange
Server, I clicked on the Full-Text Indexing tab and immediately got an
error: The RPC Server is unavailable. However I am not sure if I am
getting that as a result of the MS Search service not being started.

Regards

Alex

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Please run the following command:

cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSSearch\Bin
Regsvr32 msscntrs.dll
Regsvr32 msserror.dll
Regsvr32 mssmmcsi.dll
Regsvr32 mssmsg.dll
Regsvr32 mssmulpi.dll
Regsvr32 mssph.dll
Regsvr32 mssrch.dll
Regsvr32 msstools.dll
Regsvr32 mssws.dll
Regsvr32 nlhtml.dll
Regsvr32 objcreat.dll
Regsvr32 offfilt.dll
Regsvr32 propdefs.dll
Regsvr32 query.dll
Regsvr32 srchadm.dll
Regsvr32 srchidx.dll
Regsvr32 tquery.dll

Most of the dils can be register successfully. You will see two warnings
that "DllRegisterServer entry point was not found". That expected behavior,
I consulted the performance Team and came to know that these Dll files are
designed in such an order that this cannot be Registered.

Then restart Microsoft Search and see if the problem can be resolved.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
