VPN error 721
ghostdog 02.07.2007 03:36:00
I manage 2 SBS 2003 servers. The VPN connections to both were working fine
but stopped last week. Now both hang on verifying username and password and
display error 721. Could an automatic update broke the VPNs? One is a two NIC
setup with ISA and the other is a one NIC setup. I have read the post about
cheap routers not opening GRE but the one NIC server is using a Checkpoint
Safe[ at ]Office500 so this is not a "home user" router. The tech support for the
unit says the configuration is good. Any suggestions?

Unless Port 1723 has Mysteriously Un checked and the Router is not passing
VPN or (GRE) It's a setting on some routers.
I'd re Run the VPN connector with a FQDN, set your DHCP correctly
and make sure the users are in the "REMOTE" Group

Hi,

Error 721 mostly is about the GRE not being passed through, but in some
cases I have found that the routers don't allow multiple VPN connections
being passed through and also give the 721 error.

What "automatic update(s)" were installed on both servers since last week?

Check this out:

I think I have found the problem. I will check for driver updates and check
the other things and post how it went. I appreciate the quick responses on
the part of the newsgroups.

I would be surprised this is the issue.
(Sorry I don't mean to be negative.)

But you say you get an error 721
721 is typically an authentication type error
800 error is typically non connect.
(Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

If you have ISA and installed SP2 then you'd probably get the 800 error
(since it's blocked.)

I hope it works, but my guess is it's either GRE or they aren't a member of
the remote group anymore.

Russ

Re: VPN error 721
ghostdog 08.07.2007 05:20:00
Well, this just keeps getting better. The 791 error has gone away but now I
am getting the 800 error. I checked to make sure the login account was a
member or the remote group. I found a bunch of blogs about the Windows Server
SP2 breaking the VPN on SBS as well as other things. I had the firewall VAR
and the manufacturer verify that the firewall was passing port 1723 as well
as what else was needed. I ran through the fixes on the SBS blog mentioned
in my previous post. I am still not able to connect. Any other suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

ok 800 typically means it can't FIND the server, either blocked from port
1723 and GRE
(Make sure your Router passes this, some you must turn ON VPN pass-through.)

You say yes, so The other thing is that.
When you configure Remote Access are you using a FQDN that points back to
your SBS box?

Because 800 means it can't find/reach the server.
(Can you VPN internally? if so then it's your firewall not letting it
through.)
