Unable to ping, but connected?
"Homer Jay" <someoneelse[ at ]microsoft.com> 06.07.2007 14:53:21
In my quest to get RWW working, I have discovered that I can't ping my
client computers.......... but the weird thing is I can connect and browse
the client from the server. Clients and server can access the internet,
etc........ I am also able to ping a printer from the server.

I am having problems using the http://myserver/connectcomputer as it tells
me it can't find the list of users or computers, I followed the advice on a
KB article (ensure server IP is set as DNS on client), but still get the
same error.

Unfortunately I can't get to the client to get an ipconfig /all so at this
point am looking for suggestions as to what I can try to a) ping the client,
b) get the connectcomputer to work and c) get RWW to work......... Thanks.

Did you use the SBS client computer wizard to join the workstations to the
domain first?

Check to see whether you have the correct Host (A) records on the
Server. If you have incorrect records running it cannot ping the DC.
our server had this problem a week ago and all you need to do is
correct/delete any incorrect records.

You should only have a Host (A) record in your Forward Lookup Zone
\YourDomain.local pointing to the servers static ip address. i.e. if
your server is static ip 192.168.0.1 then there should only be a Host
(A) record that is (same as parent folder) pointing to your ip of
192.168.0.1. if not, then delete any wrong ones but be careful not to
delete the wrong ones!

Good luck. cheers mate

No, it failed with the message "unable to find list of users or computers"
which led me to the DNS setting being incorrect on the client. I updated
this but am still unable to connect using the wizard.

I had 3 in there, have removed 2 of them and am now just left with the (same
as parent folder) to server IP address.
