Licensing Question
theoverburn[ at ]gmail.com 26.06.2007 18:20:01
I recently bought an SBS2003 R2 Server from Dell and received Device
CALs (in addition to the 5 initial CALs) when I needed User CALs, I
tried to exchange them and my contact at Dell said that when I install
them, regardless of which I bought, I can choose to apply them as User
or Device CALs.

That doesn't sound right, anyone else know if this is true?

Thanks,

Aaron

Its pretty much an honor system as to whether the cals are device or user
The server doesn't really know internally.

I don't have the specific reference handy but there was an option for making
a "change" one time on cals

Are you sure you are not thinking of Software Assurance? I read <a
href=http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/chats/trans/sbs/
exsbs_050118.mspx>this</a> Executive Chat where they mentioned the
only way to make the switch is with SA.

Also, let me add that I have not added the licenses to the server, and
the ability to choose is supposedly when I decide to activate the
licenses.

As far as your first comment, is that an acceptable practice? I can't
see why it wouldn't be, seeing as both are the exact same price and
since the server has no idea what they are anyways, but maybe I'm just
trying to be hopeful now...

No, that is not true. They are different part numbers for a reason. Do not
install the CALs, call them back and have them send you what you ordered.

Didn't think so...

I knew of the Software Assurance thing (which is what he was talking
about above) but to my knowledge I didn't think that without SA, this
could be done.

Thanks for the help.

hi Aaron,

You are correct, when you enroll SBS CALs on SA and each time
you renew, you have the option of choosing Device or User CALs
SKU. But it is fixed as the User or Device CAL during the term of
the agreement; the OEM license serves as the qualifying License for
SA and you must do so within 90 days.

But it sounds like Dell mixed up your order, any way to check on
your original order? If you're going to get SA anyway and in a
hurry, then go this route otherwise don't accept the delivery and
call for a change.

HTH,
Eugene Tan
