New install.. start right off on WSS 3?
Rick 05.07.2007 02:08:00
I'm working on a new SBS system in my environment. Would you agree to just
start our new intranet right on the WSS 3? We won't be using the inbound fax
feature and plan to do the software assurance migration to SBS 2008 next
year. I'm thinking WSS 3 is so much better I should just build our intranet
right from the beginning on that. Thoughts?

SBS is not in a supported config without WSS 2.0, then if you wish to use
WSS 3.0 it needs to be installed Side by Side with WSS 2.0 per the white
paper on the SBS site.

And you can't do an inplace upgrade from SBS 2003 to the next version of SBS
Code Name Cougar. There is no announced release date for this next version
nor has it been officially named

With SBS2003R2 you have to do a side by side install. V2 is needed for the
company web and as far as I know it would break some other stuff as well.

Thanks Cris. Yes, side-by-side install for sure (already have tested it).
I'm with you on the inplace upgrade not possible due to x64 being the next
release. I'm hopeful that I'll still be able to get there on that box by
migrating to a temp server then migrating back. We'll see when we get more
details.

But would you agree when training and setting up my orginization, especially
with office 2007, I'd be better off putting the effor into WSS 3 vs WSS 2?
Only bummer I've seen is no way to get to WSS 3 from RWW.

you mean get to the WSS V3 directly from the initial RWW page? No, not
that I am aware of unless you are an expert at html and wanted to modify
that page....AT YOUR OWN RISK. I'm by no means suggesting to try it.

I'm really hoping someone or microsoft, can document a way to get the
RWW to point to a WSS 3 site. That would be such a huge benefit. I
just can't see any new installation wanting to use WSS 2 after seeing
the advances in WSS 3.

I wouldn't hold my breath
I don't think we'll see any "new" functionality/features/updates to SBS 2003

All the efforts now are focused on Cougar.

Now someone else might have figured this out..and maybe they will post
