Install Exchange tools onto XP from SBS2003 CDs
"Adrian Marsh (NNTP)" <adrian.marsh[ at ]_removeme_ubiquisys.com> 02.07.2007 17:28:10
Hi All,

A while back I posted about how to install the exchange 2003 admin tools
onto a Vista machine, which is apparently not possible.

Now I've reverted back to XP, I'd like to install them. I've put CD2 in
my PC, but the only setup app (setup/i386/setup.exe) wants a product
key, which on my SBS 2003 the only one I have is the SBS key, which
setup.exe won't accept.

Have I got the wrong installer?

A.

Hi Adrian,

Use the following program to determine the SBS product key installed on your
server...

Magic Jelly Bean

It's been at least a hundred years since I installed the Exchange tools. It
won't let you bypass the product ID if you just choose Custom Install,
selecting just the admin tools and nothing else?

There's some other stuff you need as well - if I remember right, it's just
IIS and the WS03 admin tools.

I think you may need the SMTP service installed as well:

I don't think you can install the Exchange tools from the SBS cd's
period...even if you put the product key in...will probably tell you that you
can only install this on an SBS server.

I believe you have to have the retail media to do it

Chris is right. You can't use the SBS CDs. It is not part of the SBS license
to install the Exchange tools on another computer. I looked into that when
trying to install a BES server on a separate box and talked to MS management
on it.

The only way you can get those tools onto another box is from an Exchange CD
and it will ask you for the key. But it does not need to get activated.

Hmmm.. nope it worked fine in the end. I used CD2, and remembered that I
had a key capture tool running at logon. I tried the key from that
(different to the SBS one I had), and the Exchange setup wizard accepted
it. (similar to Keyfinder).

Then the next screen was about choosing how you want to install
exchange, to which I ignored the option about connectors etc and just
went for the management tools. Only pre-requsite was to have IIS
installed, it did everything else from there on.. Didn't even need to
reboot !

thanks anyway

Adrian

If the Exchange server you plan to manage is running Exchange SP2, then you
should now apply the (E2K3) SP2 to your Admin tools installation.
(it'll only update the tools)
