explorer.exe keeps dying after applying latest updates in SBS2003
palit 27.06.2007 04:48:00
I'm accessing my SBS 2003 server using RDP. It was fine untill I installed
the latest updates. Once I login to RDP session, the screen flickers couple
of times and after that I'm not able to access the desktop or the task bar
after 2 minutes or so. In the event log I see the following message.

"The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted."

EventType : BEX P1 : explorer.exe P2 : 6.0.3790.3959 P3 : 45d6a1b7
P4 : unknown P5 : 0.0.0.0 P6 : 00000000 P7 : 033ffb20
P8 : c0000005 P9 : 00000008

szAppName : explorer.exe szAppVer : 6.0.3790.3959 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 03496da0

Looks like it is loading some DLL that it is not compaitable with and failing.

Any help is appreciated regarding this.

Thanks

Surya

have you considered removing this patch that caused the problem?

And I've applied this on several systems and not seeing this.

Do you have any add ons or toolbars on the serve?

Most likely its a problem with the third-party product. Do a clean
boot of the server and see if the issue re-occurs.

Thanks,
Moloy

I'm not sure. How do I find out? How can I disable if there are any add-ons
or toolbars?

Thanks

Thanks Moloy. Unfortunately, since I can only access this machine remotely, I
can not do a clean boot. I would like to know if there is a way to do this.

Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no work around to that. You need to have
someone onsite to make the required changes.

Yes they are... what patches are you referring to. Security patches are
removable with a few exceptions.

Re: explorer.exe keeps dying after applying latest updates in SBS2
palit 27.06.2007 20:12:02
Did more research on this. I did not mess with removing the patches. One
suggestion helped me. I disabled a d3dart.dll in InternetExplorer manage
add-ons. I'm not sure how this got there. As of now I'm able to get atleast
my desktop background active, meaning I can click on the icons on the desktop
and launch programs. The taskbar is still frozen. So I looked for d3dart.dll
in the registry and found following entries.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\d3dart
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ccd40b83-259e-4af7-9f15-a1da6cbe3178}\InprocServer32

Are these safe to be removed so that explorer.exe will not load it.
