perfromance difference (lots of SQL) SBS2K vs SBS2K3
MM <nosend2me[ at ]hotmail.com> 07.07.2007 05:22:21
We've just gone live (Swing Migration) from SBS2K on a 4 year old Dell
2500 to a new Dell 2950 with specs that put it at almost 10x the speed
of the previous box. Everyhting is working ok but SQL

We have the full install with ISA2004 running and OWA, RWW,
Sharepoint, WUSU. We have an active (10 users) SQL DB of approx 8GB
and all normal a/v backups etc. Our SQL performance is HORRIBLE
operating at 1/4 of the speed it did on the previous box - we have
reidexed the DB, rebuit stats and almost everyhting else we can thik
of. With all the other "stuff" has SBS overdone the everything onone
box limit? All the other apps are fine but no blazing fast I've
exhausted everything speed related I can find and have started a MSS
call on SQL.

Any one out there got any suggestions (I see that there are 3 SQL
instances installed Regualr SQL plus Sharepoint and Wsus both in there
own.

Any suggestions (some setting or switch that is a gotacha) would be
appreciated and if you want more details of what I've done already
I'll happily share it.

Thx,
MM

I don't recall what the default settings are when you install SQL Server,
but if you've re-indexed everything and rebuilt stats then you've covered
most bases. Other things I can think of:

1. Have any indexes been lost? Unlikely, but one developer I work with
complained that when he restored a database on another machine he found that
some indexes have been lost - I suspect "finger trouble" on his part, but
worth a check.

2. How much memory has SQL Server been told it can use? If its set to a low
amount then that will cripple performance.

3. It might be worth posting this to a sql-server specific newsgroup, can't
advise which since I don't subscribe to any.

4. Unlikely to turn up anything, but have you run a checkdb on each of your
databases?

Can't think of anything else, but it would be interesting to know what the
problem is when you find it.

What's each SQL instance doing for RAM/CPU demands?

And you can stomp on the memory needs of the other instances.. ISA for
example is a TOTAL and utter hog for memory.

Enable write caching on RAID card?

Thank you all for your for your posts.

I read yesterday about write caching perfomacne isses on DELL servers,
I'll check on that first. And update. RAM usage looks OK for the most
part - I've collected 25GB of PSSDIAG and sent them off to product
support hope for an answer Monday. With any luck the Write Caching is
an easy check and switch - maybe presto!

We'll see.

or if its not a raid card then under device manager you should be able to
set for each disk "optimise for performance", and check "Enable write
caching on the disk". On one of my servers which does use a raid card I
can't change the settings and its automatically set to "optimise for
performance" and the option to enable write caching isn't shown.

This can make a tremendous difference in performance. Good suggestion
Stephen.
