POP3 Error Messages
Ade - Port Eng 28.06.2007 11:04:05
I keep getting a repeated series of error messages in my event logs every 15
minutes which I presume corresponds to the minimum download interval in terms
of checking for email.
The messages are as follows.
1. Access denied to mailbox. Verify password and try again.
2. An error occurred during a POP3 transaction to server. The error is 0.
The operation completed sucessfully.
3.The downloading process for mailbox was ended with one or more errors.
4. The message download process finished with one or more errors.

I do not appear however to have any problems sending or receiving emails
through the server.

Can anyone offer any suggestions.

It's common to have a group of POP connector errors at the 15 minute
interval once in a while, but you shouldn't be seeing them at every
retrieval attempt. That first error seems pretty clear - I wonder if you
have one POP mailbox with incorrectly entered credentials, so all your
mailboxes are working except that one?

I suppose it's possible that the POP server responds with a password error
the first time, then gets it right on the next attempt. However, I'd want
to verify that mail is getting picked up successfully for every POP mailbox
before assuming that this is just some kind of glitch that can be ignored.

Thanks Dave

I have looked at all the settings and everything appears to be fine. I have
only just set up the server and am testing for a few weeks so I have only got
3 mailboxes set up. I have sent separate test emails to each of the addresses
and all 3 emails arrive ok.

It's puzzling that the event log records an error but then contradicts
itself later in the message by saying that download was successful.

As Dave said it is almost positive that you have one misconfigured mailbox.
One thing that happens regularly to one of my clients is poor discipline
withine staff especially new employees. Their pop comes from webmail and
employees check their email by web when away from office instead of using
OWA or Outlook over Http. The employee will change the webmail password
without realizing that this stops mail from flowing in the pop connector.
The bad password error message in event viewer always identifies which
mailbox is not opened so it is easy to identify which one to correct.
