After Directory Services Restore Clients can't see server
Juha 28.06.2007 05:42:01
Hi
After motherboard replace I'll noticed that the Mirror RAID wasn't working.
Therefore I'll had to restore sbs 2003 server using Directory Services
Restore method. I'didn't restore the DATA disks (D:disk, RAID pair) just
C:-disk and system state.
Now clients can't see shares on the server (D:-disk). "My documents" are
redirected to D:-disk. There are no Shares on the C: except some system
shares. Clients are booted once and the synchronozation doesn't work. I'll
might have a backup of the D: disk also (there is an database in that disk
and therefore I didn't wanted to restore D:).
I'll made a new administrator account on the server and tried to login with
that on the client. Didn't help. Domain x is not reachable. Also can't
contact server with remote desktop. Client's has Windows firewall on and when
try check that on the server an error message tells that program ipnat.sys is
using network address translation component. There is only NIC and DHCP comes
from HW Firewall.
I have followed these instructions:
http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/support/articles/backup_restore_sbs2003.mspx
Net share command on server shows shares as usually
What to do next? Thanks in advantage,
Juha

Also I noticed this in event viewer after reboot:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 28.6.2007
Time: 8:25:00

Computer: PATOLAHP
Description:
The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service terminated
with the following error:
The operating system cannot run Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing

Also Event Viewer tells:

Also one strange thing. According the procedure I followed, there should have
been a step to fill in Server's serial (CD) key. That never happened. So,
could this be something related activating SBS SW?

How old was the backup system state?

Have you restarted the workstations after the server restore and are they
getting the correct IP settings (DNS)?

Hi
System State was two days old. Two things:

1. Second motherboard replacement took place because the clock was bad.
Often several days late, sometmes 10 days. Suppose that there are date
problems in the backup.
2. The origanal RAID was 2x80 GB + 2x250 GB both mirored. After the first
motherboard replacement the RAID was gone. Windows saw foud disks. I suppose
that System State restore is from C: volyme.

Well there's probably more than one reason that the workstations aren't
quite happy with the domain at this point, but why haven't you finished
restoring the other drives data? Is the data already there but the
workstations just can't see it?

If that is the case, try taking one workstation back to workgroup and then
just rejoin the domain (not necessary to repeat /connectcomputer).
If that is successful, you may need to do the same to all remaining
workstations.

Re: After Directory Services Restore Clients can't see server
Juha 29.06.2007 12:34:00
Thanks,

I didn't restore D-volyme because there were a database. In my backup some
DB -services were running during it and therefore I was a fraid that DB would
be corrupted. As a mater a fact, I did't really trust the backup at all but
luckily it did restrore AD back (I hope so). Before restore I was able to
copy files into external HD:

Now when you mention, perhaps I should restore D-volume without DB. It is
just that when I made I new share on C clients weren't able to see it. I
Guess I will try to rejoin one client to domain. But... RemoteDesktop to
server doesn't work either.
