Backup Soluitons needed
"Bikini Browser" <remove.bikini.browser.this[ at ]gmail.com> 03.07.2007 15:42:06
Hey everyone!

I have a problem.. I need a low cost backup solution for SBS 2003 R2.

I need to know the following:

I need software that backup & restore individual mail boxes in exchange and
even restore individual email within the mail boxes. Can the backup
software that comes with SBS 2003 do that?

Can I backup SQL on SBS?

Can I backup and restore pages and the database from SharePoint services 3.0
on SBS?

Can I restore the entire hard drive including the OS easily? Like in a
disaster recovery?

Can I do a Grandfather, Father, and Son backup (GFS) backup like I do using
Tapes? I want 4 tapes for the week and a full backup on Friday and a
Monthly backup so I can go back 6 months and retrieve files. Can I use
separate drives to do this or do I need ONE BIG Hard Drive?

Which software will get me all of my requirements? Which software is the
easiest to use? I want to find software that a layman can run if possible.

SBS Wizard Backup NTbackup and Exmerge will do most of what you want.
Except the Quick Restore

Something that does almost everything you say is Backup Assist.
(Except the Quick Restore.)

Restore "Individual pages on Sharepoint?" Well 3.0 has a Trash can.
however I'm unaware of a product that will restore a individual page.
(Anyone)

Try Acronis or StorageCraft. around $700 USD

ok so if we mean to keep only the tools you already have then yes you can do
all that you want to do but not right out of the box using the GUI's.

Q. Can you backup Exchange and recover individual boxes or emails?
A. Yes but not with the GUI SBS Backup or even NTBackup. You will want to
script an exmerge to basically export your Exchange email boxes to PST's
then back those up with NTBackup. Since they are just PST's you can recover
as you see fit.

Q. Can I backup SQL?
A. Yes, the GUI's will do that, you can create your own NTBackup job, or
again setup a script to take SQL down, back it up then start it back up. You
have various options, depends on your needs.

Q. Can I backup SharePoint 3 both customer pages and database?
A. Kind of. You can backup the database with NTBackup, the Central
Administration, or stsadmin. To backup custom pages and parts you can use
SharePoint Designer to backup the site. SharePoint 3 has a Recycle bin for
both Users and Admins which allows for recovery of deleted documents.

Q. Can I do a D/R?
A. Yes. There are sites both MS and non-MS on the process although imaging
is getting a lot of attention as of late.

Q. Can I create my own backup rotation?
A. Yes but not with the SBS Backup Wizard. You will need to drop down to
NTBackup (the Wizard just scripts NTBackup for you) and create your own
rotation plan and schedule it.

Q. Can a layman do everything above?
A. SBS is out of the box setup to do the basics however your requirements
will most likely need some scripting and admin level knowledge. There are
backup solutions for SBS just as there are for vanilla Server but to be
honest I find most of these require some admin level knowledge as well.
BackupAssist which was mentioned is a nice frontend to NTBackup and is more
or less point and click however I do not think he has added your SharePoint
backup requirements to it yet or if he will.

Although SBS is a very Wizard oriented product for a deployment with
requirements as you have listed I would highly recommend you locate a Small
Business Specialist in your are if for no other reason than to discuss your
requirements in depth to see if this is the product for you.

In WSS 3.0, you can backup either the entire portal or on a site level by
using the stsadm.exe. What you can do is create a script to do a full
backup once a week and a differential backup everyday using the stsadm.exe
tool.. For SQL Server, you can use the BACKUP command to generate full or
differential backups - although a full database backup is what I recommend
for databases less than 20GB in size.

For more info on WSS 3.0 backups, see
