How many hours for an SBS implementation?
InterActionCRMGuru <leadtank[ at ]gmail.com> 05.07.2007 21:31:39
Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me how many hours they think it will take to configure/
implement a newly installed SBS 2003 (not including hardware setup) ?
To give you some specific details, we have 3 user computers, we are
not using the exchange features, and we will primarily use it as a
file server.

Thanks!

Then you dont want to install it.

If you want to have this server working properly then you need to install
all disks, do not stop on disk 1 then this will take 5 hrs plus... got all
those updates too.

SBS wants to work one way and you want to 'break it' so you will get
problems.

Why did you buy it ?

I dont think you understood my question....I am not trying to 'break'
anything it does. I just am not using the exchange functionality.

If the "without hardware" threw you off, I just am trying to focus the
question and find out how many hours are just involved in configuring
the SBS software portion.

Thanks.

It depends on several things, but for SBS 2003 Standard, generally allow 3 to 6
hours wall clock time for an install of SBS and related apps (e.g., antivirus).
Then 15 to 30 minutes per workstation to connect to the domain and install a
few apps, such as antivirus and Office.

HOWEVER ... If this is the FIRST time you have installed SBS - which I assume
is the case or you would not be asking this question - you really do NOT want
to put your very first install into production. Based on lots of experience of
those in this group, it takes about 3 installs from the bare metal (can be and
usually is to the same hardware) to "get it right."

See following for why:

I fully understood, you said not using exchange and just using as a
fileserver. To me that means SBS components are not being installed, no AD
either... just want a server in a workgroup.... ;-)

Cant understand your philosophy... business cry out for exchange and its
benefits. Enterprise want SBS benefits... RWW

Just a file server, what about RWW benefits etc. Just a file server then you
dont want to proceed past disk one.. plain server.

Teneo's point is clear,
If you aren't going to use the SBS as it's intended why install it?

As a CRM Guru I'd think you'd want SBS to install CRM onto it and realized
the advantages of a SBS Server.?

If you are trying to make a SBS a FILE server, in a domain, good luck.

SBS has a Special Purpose in a network environment.
Doing anything else, you won't be happy with it.

I suggest installing everything, get everything working. (And install it
correctly)
once you realize the power of RWW OWA FAX etc you will not only WANT SBS to
do your email
you will wonder what you did with out it.

And Set up RPC over HTTPS for your Laptops.
You will say Goodbye to POP3 forever!

If you already have an "Exchange server" in your network, and a Domain
Controller and over 75 users
then SBS is a bad choice

Either way SBS is a Very Poor choice for a File server,
it does so much more and you will not like trying to make it do something
else.
If you need just a "FILE" server then get a NAS..

Russ
