2 Mail Servers
"Joe" <jbarber[ at ]barbercs.com> 01.07.2007 03:25:37
Can I have 2 mail servers using the same domain.com name?

I need to have some users use POP3 mail b/c of laptops and offsite usage and
others will just get mail from SBS2k3.

It this is possible how do I setup the DNS and MX records and where at my
server the isp or dyndns?

THanks
JB

Why 2 mail servers ?

You can use POP3 from the SBServer
or far better:
You can use Outlook Anywhere ( RPC over HTTP )

Joe, once mail has been delivered to your SBS server, your remote laptops
can access their email via POP3/IMAP4, just like they do to other web mail
providers. The only "catch" is that the POP3 and IMAP4 services are disabled
by default on SBS. Simply enable the proper service. I personally enable and
use the IMAP4 service rather than the POP3 service. Virtually all cliemt
mail software supports both IMAP and POP conections.

Note: be sure you understand that when speaking about the IMAP and POP
services, this is different from the POP3 connector in SBS.

As Henry and Kevin have pointed out, you can turn on the Pop3 Server or the
IMAP server and as pointed out the best option is Outlook over HTTP and
don't use either of those. Then its just as if you were in the office.

Using the POP3 and IMAP solution, were you planning to have them reply or
create new mail using the SBS server? If so that will require some
additional configuration and potentially poses some risk

Outlook over HTTP is the way to go
