there and do not go out. There is no error running ICW. The only
relevant events I can see in event logs are below. Any help to resolve
this problem would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

RE: Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue
v-robeli[ at ]online.microsoft.com (Robert Li [MSFT]) 05.07.2007 10:02:07
Hello John,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that the e-mails stay in SMTP queue and
cannot be send out. If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Please let me know the following to make the situation more clearly:

1. Are the problematic e-mails sent to internal recipients or Internet
recipients?
2. Do all the senders or some specific senders have this problem?
3. Can the user get NDR?
4. Do all the outgoing e-mails have this problem?

In your application log, you only found

SOCKS Filter error 20002
Microsoft Firewall 14060
Microsoft Management Console 1000

Based on my research, Socks Filter is used when the internal clients access
the external site by using the socks connection. This issue may occur if
there is an application which has already been listening on port 1080.

Please follow the steps below to find out that application:

At a command prompt, run "netstat -ano | find ":1080"" (without the
quotation marks). You should see a line similar to the following:

TCP 192.168.16.2:1080 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 2340

Here the "2340" is the ID of the process that is listening on port 1080.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to click Task Manager. On the Processes tab. Click View
-> Select Columns. Check PID (Process Identifier) and click OK. In the
process list, find the process with 2340 PID. What''s the process?

When you find out the process that is listening on port 1080, you need to
reconfigure it to listen on a different port. Restart that application and
see if the problem will disappear.

Please also take the following steps:

Step 1: Please rerun the CEICW wizard again to ensure the network and
e-mail setting correct.

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

Step 2: Please make a clean boot to make sure the problem is not caused
third party software:

1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
4. Click OK and choose Restart.
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

Step 3: If you have e-mail scan software installed, please temporally
uninstall and check again.

Step 4: Please make sure you domain has three records of DNS: A, MX and PRT
correct registered by your ISP.

You can use NSLOOKUP tool to check these records.

Using NSlookup.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200525

Step 5: Please try to send mail to the problematic domain via telnet, can
you send out e-mail successfully?

1. On SBS server, in the command prompt, run the following command "telnet
intersci.com 25", and then try to use the telnet session to send an
internet email:

rcpt to:<internet email address>

Re: Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue
John <livingusman[ at ]googlemail.com> 05.07.2007 15:54:13
Hi Robert

Before I saw this reply I had removed win 2003 sp2 and installed all
five components of sbs sp1 except share point update which was not
needed and exchange 2003 was already on sp2. I however did not install
ISA2004 sp1 and left ISA 2000 as it is. I am not sure what but
something made the outgoing emails to start going out and ICW and
Remote Access Wizrads ran fine. So far so good. This afternoon
suddenly the out going emails stopped again. No significant events in
the log except the ones below and ICW runs fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Robert

I have now followed the steps that you outlined.

To keep things simple I am using msconfig to keep additional stuff out for
the moment.

[Quoted Text]
> 1. Are the problematic e-mails sent to internal recipients or Internet
> recipients?

External.

Internal are working fine.

> 2. Do all the senders or some specific senders have this problem?

All have the sam eproblem. Problem seem sot be at SMTP an dnot with any
specific user. All users get block whne it is not working and all users are
OK when it is owkring.

> 3. Can the user get NDR?

So far only delay notifications have come through. It hasn't passed that
much time.

> 4. Do all the outgoing e-mails have this problem?

Yes. They are all stuck in queue.

Running netstat -ano | find ":1080" gave the following (after replacing pid
with process name) at two different reboots;

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>netstat -ano | find ":1080"
TCP 0.0.0.0:1080 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

MMC.EXE

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>netstat -ano | find ":1080"

Before the services using port 1080 keep changing between reboots I am not
sure how to do this.

We have trend scan mail but this is now totally disabled via msconfig.

The ISP smtp server smtp.gotadsl.co.uk seems to respond fine.

Re: Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue

Hi John,

Thanks for you reply.

The ISA event is not the cause of the problem.

According to your reply, I know that you only get delay notifications, but
there are no NDRs.

If the e-mails are not sent out, you should get NDRs, so it seems the
e-mails are sent out successfully and they are just delayed. Please contact
the recipients to confirm this. Also please send me the SMTP log and I need
to do research.

Based on my experience, there are following researching why some mails are
in the Queue:

1. You are experience high volume of mail flow, so whenever you see the
SMTP queue, you can see mail in the queue.

2. You server is a relay server for other domain. By default, the Default
SMTP Virtual Server in Exchange 2003 is configured to prevent relaying of
e-mail messages through the virtual server. Please check the following:

1. Open Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand "Servers", expand "<ServerName>", and then expand "Protocols".
3. Expand "SMTP", right-click "Default SMTP Virtual Server", and then click
"Properties".
4. Click the "Access" tab, and then click "Relay".
5. In the "Relay Restrictions" dialog box, click "Only the list below, and
you can only see the IP of your SBS server.
6. Click "OK".

I noticed that when you I ran windows update and as a result some services
were stopped the emails started to go out. General speaking, when update
services runs, no other services will stop.

Please run update services again, can the problem be reproduced?

Please help collect the following information and I need to do research:

1. When you run NSLOOKUP, what's the result.

2. SMTP log (Also there is no NDR, this log is very useful)

1) Open the properties page of the Default SMTP Virtual Server in Exchange
System Manager.
2) On the General tab, check the "Enable logging" box.
3) Click Properties, click the Extended Properties tab and check all the
boxes on the list.
4) Click OK twice.
5) Stop and restart the SMTP virtual server.
6) Ask a client to send some test emails entiled "Test Email To problematic
destination email domains" to an recipient of those problematic destination
email domains.
7) Stop the SMTP virtual server.
8) Go to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\SMTPSVC1 folder and send me log

3. Please send me the MPS report.

1) Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_Exchange.EXE to download the file.
2) Run the MPSRPT_Exchange.EXE on the server box.
3) Wait for 10~15 minutes.
4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to %SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Exchange\cab\
5) Send the .cab file directly to me.

Please send the information to v-robeli[ at ]microsoft.com with subject:
39791384-Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Re: Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue
"John" <John[ at ]nospam.infovis.co.uk> 06.07.2007 10:43:20
Hi Roberts

The reason for no NDRs is that emails do get out from time to time for some
reason. Fro example, when I ran windows update yesterday it caused a few
services to stop and as a result mail started to go out. This to me seems
like some services are fighting for resources and once some are shut, the
right ones let the mails work again. I also think if mails would not have
gone out for along enough NDRs would have been generated.

I will now follow rest of your comment.

Thanks

The emails are only about 400 or so in the whole day...does not sound that
much. Also I have checked and all mail is ours in the queue that is our
server is not relaying emails from another server.

It has three IPs;

192.168.16.2 [Internal NIC]
127.0.0.1
192.168.1.2 [External NIC]

Server is currently operational, Will do it later and come back.

Not sure about this part. The ISP's smtp server is smtp.gotadsl.co.uk. I can
both ping the server and telnet at port 25 just fine.

File attached in email.

This is tricky. The SMTP works on and off for example when I start/stop SMTP
Virtual Serve email starts to go out. If I say run the ICW then it stops
again.

Hi,

Thanks for updating.

I am sorry for the delay due to the weekend.

Your SBS relay setting is correct.

This very strange I checked your SMTP log, I found "Sender address
rejected. Domain not find". That may be caused by PTR record. But I visit
DNSSTUFF, all the records are correct.

It's seems the e-mail is only delayed. Please do the following test:

1. Create a gmail account for yourself.
2. Send e-mail from your domain to g-mail, check if the e-mail reaches to
gmail, and also how long does this take.

Please also help me collect the following information:

1. Message Tracking log.

Open ESM, on the General tab in the server's Properties dialog box, select
the Enable message tracking check box. After the issue is reproduced,

The problem is intermittent. For example it was working fine in the morning
but stopped working in the afternoon and mail started collecting in the SMTP
Queue.

Hi Robert

Since the logging has been set to Max, I am getting below events for emails.
Since I can send emails via Outlook Express from server I doubt if our
domain's entries at the domain host (an external company) has any problem.

Thanks

Regards

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeTransport
Event Category: SMTP Protocol
Event ID: 7002
Date: 09/07/2007
Time: 15:57:00
User: N/A

Description:
This is an SMTP protocol warning log for virtual server ID 1, connection
#29. The remote host "195.112.4.54", responded to the SMTP command "rcpt"

Re: Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue
v-robeli[ at ]online.microsoft.com (Robert Li [MSFT]) 10.07.2007 10:46:58
Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I checked Message Tracking log, the e-mails are successfully send out.

Also the IIS worker process error is not cause of the problem.

From MSExchangeTransport event 7002 and 4007, I found "Sender address
rejected: Domain not found" Most time, this is caused by incorrect PTR
record. I cannot do NSLOOKUP in our company because that's blocked by
firewall. I made a check in DNS staff and found the PTR is not correctly
configured. Please use NSLOOKUP in your environment to check the PTR
record. If that's true, you need to contact ISP to correct the record.

Using NSlookup.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200525

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

Re: Outgoing emails staying in SMTP queue

Hi John,

How are the things going on?

Have you got a chance to check the PTR record of your domain? In our
company the firewall blocks nslookup so I cannot test myself. Thanks for
your understanding.

The issue occurs when the destination mail servers are doing a reverse
lookup on incoming messages coming from you domain and they expect to bind
this entry back to the PTR setup for your domain. If that is unsuccessful,
this will return the error from above: Sender address rejected: Domain not
found

More info:
You are unable to send or receive SMTP messages from certain Internet
domains in Exchange 2000 Server, in Exchange Server 2003, and in Small
Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300171

Also, the destination mail server can cause this problem. From example, it
gives you limited thread to connect, so the mails wait in the queues. After
some time, the mails are sent out but delayed. After you restart SMTP, the
session is reconnect, at first the e-mails send out quickly, soon the same
problem reappears.

Please kindly help me collect a screen shot of the queue and I need to do
research. Thanks for your time.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
