Problems with Updating to Services pack 2 on 2003 server
Eli 14.06.2007 05:54:00
2003 Server SP1

During the instalation, it errors out ..failed to instal catalog files..
I found this procedure, tried in both safe and normal mode.
didn't help.
Any sugestions?

Step 1: Start the MSDTC (Distributed Transaction Coordinator) service
=================================
1. Click Start and click Run.
2. Type in SERVICES.MSC and click OK.
3. Look for the service MSDTC (Distributed Transaction Coordinator).
4. Double-click it and verify if it is started.
5. If not, click the Start button.

If the service has already been started, please continue.

Step 2: Rename temporary folders of Windows Update
=================================
1. Click Start and click Run.
2. Type %WINDIR% in the open box and click OK.
3. Find the folder SoftwareDistribution. Right-click on it and select
RENAME. Then type in SDOLD and press ENTER.
4. Find and enter the sub-folder System32.
5. Find the folder CatRoot2 and rename it to CR2OLD.

Step 3: Backup the folder {F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
=================================
1. Click Start and click Run. Type in: SYSTEM32 and click OK.
2. Enter the folder CATROOT. (Not CatRoot2 in Step 1.)
3. Find the sub-folder {F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} and then right
click on it, and then select copy.
4. Click Start, click Run, type: C:\ and then press Enter.
5. In the open Window, right click a place and select Paste. The folder
{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} will be copied to this location.

Step 4: Clean up the folder {F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
=================================
1. Navigate to the same location.
C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
2. Delete all the content in this folder and Click "Yes to All" if you
received the warning message.

NOTE: We may receive the failure message "Access Denied" when performing
Step 2 to 5. If so, please refer to Step 6 to boot into Safe Mode and try
again.

Step 5: Create the Update.cat file in the same folder
=================================
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab. Please uncheck the option (Hide extensions for known
files types)
3. Navigate to
C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
4. In this folder, click File on the Menu bar and select New
5. Create a New Text Document file
6. Input the name Update.cat and press Enter to rename the file to Update.cat

Step 6: Download and install Service Pack 2

I followed your links, on the 10th procedure it worked, but I can’t connect
to it anymore thru RDP.
I can see the server, access share folders, IIS, etc.
But RDP doesn’t work.
Any ideas?
