I am unable to mirror 2 disks. Here is my setup:
2 Physical SCSI disks. Both 36 GB. No onboard RAID controller.
Disk 0 - Dynamic. Has C: and D:. Both NTFS, both Simple. Partition Style: MBR
I am trying to fully mirror disk 0 onto disk 1. If I right-click on either the C: or D: partitions, the option to 'Add Mirror' exists, but I cannot mirror them both!
Here is another odd thing: Both physical hard drives show slightly different sizes. Disk 0 shows 33.91 GB. Disk 1 Shows 33.79 GB.
Can anyone help?
Thanks PM

Are both disks the exact same model and firmware rev? A different drive firmware revision could make the drives look different to the system.
In any case you are probably right that you would only be able to mirror one partition or the other if the second drive reports being smaller. If you have no other option you might need to backup the server and restore it to drive 1, and then make it drive 0. Then you should be able to mirror them.

Interesting. So basically, with my current setup, I SHOULD be able to mirror the drives, correct?

Did you accidentally convert disk 1 to GPT? If so, you should revert it back to MBR so the disks are the same size.
If you want to check to see if it's a GPT disk, you can go to a command line and type DISKPART. In the diskpart prompt, issue a 'list disks' command. In the far right column, if there's an asterisks present, then you're looking at a GPT disk.

The disk you want to make a mirror has to be larger or have more free space, you can not mirror a 33.9GB disk to a 33.8GB disk.
Google for RAID and read up on it.

OK I did as you suggested, and now BOTH disks show exactly the same size, which is good. However, I STILL cannot mirror more than one of the 2 partitions. After I mirror one, the option to mirror the other is greyed out. ANy other options?

John:
I did as you suggested but am still only able to mirror one disk at a time. After I mirror one of them, the 'Add Mirror' option greys out of the list on the other one. Both disks look identical in every way.

Does the same thing happen if you try it the other way? Create the partitions on the 2nd disk and then mirror back to the 1st. If this works, I would guess that your disks are not quite identical. You should check out the capacity of each disk and make sure that these are the same...just because Disk Manager reports that disks are the same size does not mean that they are exactly the same. If one disk is 1 kb too small, the disk will not mirror.
