Replication/Redundancy with Domain Controller
Bryan 05.07.2007 19:50:01
I am trying to help someone out who wants some information on how to
replicate Domain Controller to a seperate box.

I don't know much about this stuff. I am really just looking for some
documentation that explains how that works and how to set it up.

I am not even sure if I am using the correct phrase when I say "replicate
Domain Controller". I know that they need redundancy in terms of if
something goes wrong with the box that DC is on or if there is a complete
site failure, how to make sure that DC stays up in running on another box
elsewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Like in having a second domain controller and replicating Active Directory
between the two?

If yes,

Build the new sevrer, join it to the domain as a member server, reboot, then
start|run "dcpromo". Follow the 'wizard' adding an additional domain
controller to an existing domain.

A few additional tasks after that, but that's the essentials.

yes...that is what i am talking about.

is there any documentation on how that works and how to set it up?

I am looking for some step-by-step instructions (preferably detailed) and an
explanation of how it works. can this be done in a WAN? do they both share
the responsibilitie of DC when both are active or is there some sort of
failover if the primary one fails?

like i said, i am looking for any documentation, not necessarily for someone
to answer all of my questions

thanks

do both boxes, then share the load

Good. Homework time. Perhaps start here;

Start out here with this article, webcast at TechRepublic. I think it may be
a good place to start. There are also several other articles related to . I
am not sure if there is a single comprehensive how to source though one may
be out there somewhere. You will need to sign up for a free account to view
the webcast.

Service
This webcast presents an overview of the directory service in Windows Server
2003 Active Directory. The webcast describes how Active Directory works. It
also describes how to monitor and troubleshoot Active Directory replication.
It answers frequently asked questions about Active Directory replication.
