I am attempting to perform a migration from a Novell Netware 6 environment to Windows Server 2003 R2 using Microsoft Services For Netware(SFN) 5.03 SP2. The Windows servers have the latest patches and SFN is running on a domain controller with Novell Client for Windows 4.91 SP3.
The Microsoft Directory Synchronization Service(MSDSS) installed properly, migrated Netware accounts to Active Directory(AD) OUs and continues one-way synchronization without issue.
When attempting to use the File Migration Utility(FMU) to transfer files and permissions from Netware to a Windows 2003 server, the FMU indicates that the forest is "unavailable" in the Active Directory target selection window of Step 3.
The FMU is being run on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller(DC) that is not having any issues what-so-ever. The share is published in Active Directory and Explorer searches for AD shares from the FMU server return all of the published shares.
I have searched extensively for a solution and, although I have found other reports of this issue, I have yet to find any solution. Has anyone else seen this behavior and is there a resolution?
Thanks in advance,
Peter

Thank you for your response. I was previously aware of the document that you linked to however, the document refers to version 5.02 SP2 as fixed. As I stated in my original post, I am running version 5.03 SP2, which is even newer and is the only version available on Microsoft's site.
This can only mean that there has been a regression and the problem has returned, or I am experiencing a different problem with the same symptoms. In either case, the link does not resolve my issue.
I would be willing to try the older version of the File Migration Utility if you could indicate where I might find it. It seems to have been removed from Microsoft's site since it was superceded by the newer 5.03 SP2 version.
Thanks.
Peter

Hi Peter,
For your issue, I have performed further research and found the following possible cause for your reference:
Possible causes: The Windows 2003 DC name is longer than 15 characters. This could cause a problem with NetBIOS name resolution. Or the target server has the same name as the Source Novell server.
Possible Resolution: Demote the DC, renamed it and promoted back up. Make sure DC replicating properly. Restart MSDSS, resynchronize and thereafter able to see the AD side of the FMU tool. Or rename the target server name.
Thanks & Regards,
Ken Zhao

Ken,
Thank you very much for your persistence on this issue. You are absolutely correct that the issue is due to a DC name in excess of 15 characters. In this particular case, the DC on which MSDSS and the FMU were running from had a 17 character long name which was being truncated to 15 characters for the NetBios name. Your instructions for demoting and renaming the DC resolved the issue and the FMU now works as expected.
Thank you again for your assistance.
