migrate from SBS 2003 Std SP1 to 2k3 R2 Std
brad.hokanson[ at ]gmail.com 11.06.2007 19:35:26
I have a SBS 2k3 Stnd w/SP1 AD domain from which I need to migrate to
an 2k3 R2 Stnd AD domain. I know the AD Schema of 2k3 R2 is different
than that of SBS 2k3. So my questions are:

1) do I need to ADPREP my SBS 2k3 Stnd w/SP1 machine first with the
2nd cd from my 2k3 R2 Stnd cd and extend the schema to include the
changes in 2k3 R2?

2) If so, and after that is completed, I assume I can I add my 2k3 R2
Sntd machine as a DC in the SBS 2k3 Stnd AD domain (DCPROMO) and then
transfer FSMO roles to it. Then take down my SBS 2k3 Std server and
then sieze the FSMO roles on the 2k3 R2 Std server. Is this corect?

I have checked sbsmigration.com and they do not have this migration
listed and M$ has several articles but none mention the moving to 2k3
R2 from SBS 2003 Stnd w/SP1.

Thanks

Brad

Yes, if you are going to use 2K3R2 DC's.

Yes, but you should be able to transfer the roles before taking down the SBS
server. Also, don't forget to make the new 2K3R2 DC also a Global Catalog
Server (& become functional) before you shutdown SBS.

Are you going to use Exchange in the post SBS domain?

KJ.

Thanks for the quick response!!

Yes I plan on moving entirely away from SBS. I will be putting in 3
additional servers, 1 of which will will be a secondary DC. The others
will be hosting WSUS, WSSv3, FSRM, and DFS

Thanks for the reminder on the GC.

I am and already have it purchased (not 2007...I am not quite that
brave yet)

Any other suggestions?

Brad

If I read that as you plan to use Exchange 2003 with the new server(s), then
I'd install the new Exchange 2003 server, & move the mailboxes over from the
SBS server before cutting it loose. I'ts much less work than cleaning up an
orphaned Exchange organization and then importing the mailboxes with
exmerge.

My thoughts as well. I don't want to make more work for myself than I
have.

So my very simplified plan is:

-extend SBS 2k3 schema from CD2 of 2k3 R2 media.
-add 2 server to domain.
-DCPROMO one of them and also make it GC (secondary DNS, WINS, etc)
-add other server, install exchange on it and then move mailboxes.
-transfer FMSO roles to GC machine.
-double check everything transfered.
-take down SBS machine.

You'll need to follow it up with an Active Directory Metadata cleanup and
orphaned Exchange server removal, since you'll be unplugging and not
demoting the SBS server.

KJ,

One more question on this since I am planning to do this process in
the next week. I purchased lics when I purchased the new servers. My
question now is will I have any problems with using these new licenses
when I remove the old SBS 2k3 server. There isnt anything on the
clients that would have any problem with this new licensing right? I
dont think there is but I thought it would be worth asking the
question.

Also, would there be anything remaining in AD from the SBS world after
I do the adprep from the 2nd cd of the 2k3 R2 media that could cause
me any problems in the future? Is it worth considering NOT actually
"mirgating" from SBS 2k3 and instead removing all the clients from the
domain and starting everything from scratch as though SBS was never
involved?

Thanks,

Brad

Outlook 2003 is part of the SBS licensing CAL, but if you have regular
Exchange 2003 CAL's then the same applies. If you plan on using Exchange
2007, then you either need Outlook 2007 (Office license) or seperate license
for Outlook 2003.

Really just what you should expect. Group Policies specific to SBS, Login
scripts, etc. You'll have a little cleanup to do, but nothing drastic as
long as your SBS AD wasn't mucked with.

If you don't have any issues with AD as it stands, then I'd need a reason or
reasons to scrap it and start over. It's a trade between redoing everything
and starting completly fresh.
