migrate windows 2000 DC sp3 to new server
Patrick 22.06.2007 04:27:02
Thanks all for your help first.

Current config:
3 windows 2000 DC /sp3 with DNS, DHCP, Printer sharing

I want to migrate all these DC to new server (new hardware) and keep windows
2000 DC environment.

Please clarify the following step are correct or not:
1. install windows 2000 /sp4 with all latest hotfix
2. join the domain
3. promote the new server to DC. (any issue if coexist of windows 2000 DC
sp3 and sp4?)
4. Transfer all FSMO roles, DNS, DHCP to the new server.
5. depromte all old server and power it off.

Is it the best practice (need) to install DNS service on all DC server?
Or install the DNS and DHCP on a seperate member server for easy management?

any white paper talking about this?

Thanks for your help

Patrick

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, your steps are ok. You may have a separate server as a DHCP
server and you may install DNS service on all DC servers.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

As I know that I can tranfter the "FSMO" from GUI or command line, which one

And any sequence that I need to follow when I transfer the "FSMO"?

Thanks for your help.

RE: migrate windows 2000 DC sp3 to new server
Patrick 04.07.2007 04:26:01
Hi Ken,

Thanks for your help.

I did the dcpormo on a new server. The replication process is completed
without any error. Then I look at the event viewer -> Directory Services, I
got a lot error all about exchange object like one below:

"Class identifier 2116288551 (class name msExchOmaConnector) has an invalid
superclass 1936142052. Inheritance ignored. "

Any issue on it?
Then reboot the server for a few times, those error message do not appear
again.

Thanks for your help.

Patrick
