This is the subject of some debate. Some people like to use the non-standard TLDs, such as .local or .internal. Personally, I prefer to use either a) the same DNS namespace, if the customer is reasonably comfortable managing external DNS entries; or b) a subdomain of the DNS namespace. So, I would go with either #1 or #3.
Of course, that's just my 2 cents. YMMV.
