The DFS Management GUI
Andy Mac 10.07.2007 13:28:01
General observations after (eventually) successfully deploying DFS R2 over
the last month :-
DFS in general - good, and infinitely better then the previous incarnation
which we seldom touched because... well, it didn't work. Nice
REPLICATION - excellent Wizard to setup replication and very efficient
operation, certainly on the site I have just implemented. The odd hiccup
around event log messages but on the whole, I'm impressed. Which leads me on
to ......
EVENT LOGS - Help on the forums regularly needed; several messages lead to
the Help and Support "We're Sorry" nicety ...... MOM would have been useful
here where we would have been able to create our own entries based on
investigation.
DOCUMENTATION - in dire need of some consolidation from MS in relation to
what is relevent to each version of DFS. Very confusing and not easy to
navigate. Also, I found that whilst working with DFS R2 / SP2 it was not
always helpful being referred to a document called "How DFS works" which was
written in 2003.
GENERAL SUPPORT ISSUES - using this forum as a gauge, it seems lots of
people suffer form the same issues. Jill and Ned (and others) seem to answer
many queries (thanks) but many constantly remain "in the air"
HOTFIXES / SERVICEPACKS - nearly broke my implementation here with incorrect
guidance on installing some unpublished hotfixes. Hope this is made more
logical if they (MS) ever get round to publishing them
The GUI ! ! !- as I have just explained to MS I find some parts of the GUI
downright WRONG. If they are not wrong (quite possible - I am no DFS expert
!) then they are clearly confusing, unnecessarily duplicated and certainly
counter-intuitive. I refer specifically to parts relating to Referral
Ordering, Failback and Inheritence. Real-life has constantly contradicted the
docs in these areas even after a multitude of attempts to RTFM ! !

As the message suggests, these are comments only based on my humble opinion.
They are not an attempt to belittle MS or the DFS team. I have found PSS to
be particualrly helpful at times.
